Last December's end-of-year announcement that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was on its way came as delightful surprise to many of us. Revealed at the PlayStation Experience, the first images and gameplay footage were shown to those lucky few in attendance. Along with the announcement, it was revealed that the X-Men would be excluded from the game altogether. That information wasn't received quite as well as news of the impending release, but producers of the game assured audiences that replacements for the #Xmen would indeed satisfy our appetites.
No further details were shared regarding which Marvel characters would replace the X-Men. But if we look at the inclusion of #CaptainMarvel in Infinite and in Avengers: Infinity War, then we could assume the game will feature characters of the #MarvelCinematicUniverse to fill that mutant void.
Who Could Replace The X-Men?
Seeing as how previous installments in the #MarvelvsCapcom games featured a variety of X-Men-related characters, any number of the MCU's current or upcoming crop could suitably make their way over to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Some of these characters might be those who appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, or perhaps they'll be MCU characters. Following is a list of the likeliest candidates.
Thanos
Thanos appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes and has already made his presence felt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so that's two good reasons for why he could appear in Infinite. #Thanos is set to play a pivotal role in Avengers: Infinity War, as will Captain Marvel.
Venom
Spider Man's role in Captain America: Civil War was just the start for Spidey in the MCU, so his return to the spotlight could see attention also focus on his associates. With that in mind, why not see Venom return to Infinite?
Bucky Barnes
If a character's inclusion is determinate of their popularity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then Winter Soldier would be a perfect addition. With Bucky Barnes set to recover from his dark past as the #WinterSoldier, he'll likely be in contention for the title of Captain America.
Captain America: Winter Soldier teased Bucky taking up the mantle of the Star-Spangled Avenger, and with all the attention from Marvel fans, #BuckyBarnes could be a valuable addition to the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise.
Ant-Man
Another popular character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man made a huge impact in Civil War and will be returning for Avengers: Infinity War. With that in mind, it's no giant leap of logic to expect his inclusion in Infinite.
Black Widow
As for Black Widow, she should be considered for Infinite due to her similarities in fighting styles with X-23. Natasha Romanoff is a fan of jumps and kicks to defeat her opponents, similar to how X-23's fighting style was set up in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, making for a seamless stand-in.
