GTA 6: The known, the unknown and the rumors

GTA 5 was published in 2013 on previous-generation systems, which means that fans have had to wait longer than ever before for a new game and with that anticipation comes impatience.

With the internet ablaze with rumors, an article from Kotaku in 2020 about Rockstar's crunch culture included a proposal for "a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series" and all but confirming GTA 6's production.

Despite a fresh leak indicating a 2023 release date, there isn't any definite details about the next Grand Theft Auto game. There are constant leaks claiming a date, but they should be regarded with a grain of salt.

According to industry expert Michael Patcher GTA 6 may not be released until 2022 or later:

“I say it comes out after 2022… remember Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out eight years after the first one – so the idea that GTA 6 comes out in 2021 seems ridiculous.”

Tom Henderson, a dependable leaker and insider, has predicted a similar release date, stating that the game would most likely be released in 2024 or 2025:

”If you’re expecting to play this game in the next couple of years, I would definitely put your expectations in check… I don’t think we’re seeing this until 2024 or 2025”

Jason Schreier, a games journalist, has backed up Henderson's allegations claiming that his sources have told him a similar release window:

“I'm not sure why everyone believes I stated GTA VI would be released in 2023...Everything Tom Henderson has stated about the game confirms what I've heard.”

With the current financial earnings report on August 3 new yearly roadmaps for Rockstar parent company Take-Two appeared. There are presently 19 “core releases” in the works. However, GTA 6 was not addressed by name. According to these ideas we won't hear about GTA 6 until late 2022 at the earliest.

Platforms in GTA 6

With GTA 6's release date uncertain, the chances of the game appearing on last-gen PS4 and Xbox One platforms are minimal. With the graphics gap between consoles and PCs as thin as it's ever been, Rockstar should concentrate on the raw power they all give.

Crossplay

Crossplay is currently unavailable in none of Rockstar's titles. With GTA 6 it's possible that this will be the first time the functionality debuts in one of their games.

Though no details about GTA 6 have been disclosed, there are a number of major mechanics that fans would want to see return from previous Rockstar games as well as some whole new ones, such as:

In the stolen maps the bottom city is Rio de Janeiro according to Boastful Clown, who also provided some kind of "proof." Despite the fact that several Redditors confirmed the allegation these ongoing map rumors continue to thrill GTA fans worldwide.

May 2021: Vice City map leaks

The map of Vice City has been leaked and it will be released in May 2021. New details of the Vice City environment continue to emerge from the shadows. The leak, which was published on Imgur, has a lot more information than the one that was originally shared in 2018.

The leak has sparked excitement among fans on sites such as Reddit, with user himikotogaas writing:

“With how many times I’ve seen this now and how it just continuously keeps getting more and more added onto it, the more I hope it is legit.”

Throughout 2021, Vice City speculations persisted with enthusiasts doubling down on the notion thanks to leaked images and even leaked radio stations. On July 8, a complete video of the supposed GTA 6 map was released.

Asia and South America

Others believe it will take place on a different continent such as South America or Asia. One leak even suggested that the game will be set in a different era, such as the 1970s or 1990s. However, this has been debunked.

Moving GTA to a new nation or era is an option according to Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games:

"At the moment, it seems like GTA's DNA is contemporary-ish, American-ish, English-speaking-ish, since that's what it has been... that doesn't necessarily limit it to those."

Although this remark doesn't reveal a specific place or date, it does show that Rockstar is willing to push the bounds of the usual GTA game.

April 2021: GTA 6 Modern Setting Hints

According to a new leak our next GTA adventure will take place in a more familiar location. A job advertising for Rockstar India said that they were searching for a Mixed Media Animator, which added fuel to the flames because of the following tasks specified in the job description.

Narrative, characters and story

While it has been said that the GTA 6 plot is complete there has been much conjecture regarding the amount of playable characters in the game. Will there be a single main character as in GTA V or will there be many characters? Actors and cast members for GTA 6 have been rumored.

CJ, perhaps one of the series' most well-known protagonists, was the subject of speculations that he might be returning. Voice actor Chris Bellard, on the other hand, shared an image of a previous story that suggested his return to the series, writing:

“To kill the rumors! I’m not involved in GTA VI at all. F**k @Rockstargames period… CJ will have to be voiced by another MF but not me IDGAF what y’all heard.”

Characters in the lead

The first concrete lead for a character in GTA 6 has come from a member of the cast. GTA VI and Rockstar Games are included on Jorge Consejo's resume for a CGI part he played with his character identified simply as "The Mexican." The game will focus around four people according to anonymous leakers, who even named three of them. However, Consejo's role isn't mentioned.

Female protagonists

GTA 6 would include a female protagonist according to other leaks, which was verified by previously stated leaker Tom Henderson. Apart from multiplayer online options, this is something that has yet to appear in any of Rockstar's recent titles including Bully, Red Dead and GTA.

June 2021: Leaks in the Bitcoin currency

According to another feature leak GTA 6 will have some sort of cryptocurrency as well as the return of the stock market. According to Tom Henderson this functionality will be mostly used by the game's higher-up characters. Especially when transferring large sums of money to the player character rapidly.

GTA 6 teasers and leaks

There have been a slew of other GTA 6 leaks including a number of job posts from Rockstar North that have been picked up by fans of the franchise, starting with Character Costume & Wardrobe Stylists.

Announcement of a live event

Rockstar announced a job opening for a "Live Events Co-ordinator" on their website in June 2021. Some GTA 6 enthusiasts have assumed that an earlier leak regarding a live event announcement for GTA 6 is real based on this sliver of information. According to the previous leak GTA 6 will be shown to fans through a series of live events and GTA Online updates.

These leaks should be taken with a grain of salt as always, but it's likely that the two are linked.

Teasers

Other apparent clues have surfaced, notably in the developer's Christmas present to influencers. The contents of the present were revealed on social media and included a previously unseen Rockstar logo patch patterned in the Colombian flag.

Domain names for Vice City Online, Rockstar Cartel, and GTA 6

Take-Two Interactive has previously renewed two fascinating domain names according to a Reddit user. Rockstar Games' publishing arm has revived gtavicecityonline, gtavi and rockstarcartel.

Take these domains with a grain of salt because companies are known to renew their domain names on a regular basis, even if they have no plans to use them.
