Since 1999 with the release of the original trilogy Star Wars Lego sets, the world of Lego Star Wars has exploded, becoming one of the most popular and successful Lego franchises, spanning across actual Lego, video games, films, and TV shows. Lego Star Wars video games in particular, made by British video games developer Traveller's Tales, have sold more than 50 million copies of the respective Lego Star Wars games. Often held in high regard, the Lego Star Wars video games cover the stories of the prequel trilogy, the original trilogy, The Clone Wars, and The Force Awakens. Upcoming title The Skywalker Saga covers all nine films in the Skywalker saga, with a release date of “Spring 2021.”

Announced in 2019 at E3, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has been anticipated greatly, and many fans have been eagerly awaiting a release date, yet nothing official has been declared apart from the fact that it will release in early 2021. However, according to a Redditor posting a Public.gr image, The Skywalker Saga has a 2021 release date of March 2nd. This isn't that surprising since it's officially been announced that the release date was early 2021. They also say, “The store is pretty reliable as it is among the biggest in Greece,” and that you should “take it with a grain of salt.” It seems that the poster themselves does not know whether or not to believe the leaked release date. Without proper sources or images, there is no way to tell whether or not the leak is genuine. The picture included could be 'shopped, or the date could in fact be a placeholder, to be changed when the actual release date is officially announced.

Originally, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, might've released on October 20th, 2020, as stated by the Star Wars Youtube channel on May 7th, 2020. However, on the same day, the video was made private, and a new video was uploaded with the release date cut. On the 26th of August, the Lego website suggested that the release date was 2021, but was then updated with the date removed. The next day at the 2020 Gamescom Opening Night Live, an announcement was made that the game would release in 2021 during Q1 or Q2 under the description of “Spring 2021.” Currently, the Star Wars official website states the release date as “Spring 2021.” Release dates can be a touchy subject with developers and gamers alike, and many, many mistakes have been made by the management of games companies, especially in recent times. Not sticking to a release date and delaying games can be good for development, but also very bad for publicity, finance, and also genuine goodwill on the part of a gamer audience. Personally, I feel if a release date is official, it should be fixed, and I have no issue if a release date is not announced at all until it is certain that the game is ready. Traveller's Tales' silence on the release date of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga could be for a number of reasons, but I'm sure they are good ones.

In most of the Lego video games, the player must advance through the story in a linear order. In Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, all nine stories from the respective films have been collected into one cohesive story, but players can choose to start the game from any of the nine films in the Skywalker saga and complete them in any order they like. Each of the nine episodes have five story missions, making a total of 45 levels, as opposed to the six levels per episode in the previous games. The game's hub will not be a single area, as it is in the Mos Eisley Cantina in Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, but instead is similar to Skywalker Saga's predecessor, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Players can fully explore planets and roam aboard ships and stations, such as Star Destroyers and the Death Star. There will also be random encounters, such as Imperial Star Destroyers jumping out of hyperspace to deploy TIE Fighters, which players can then engage in dogfights. Players will also be able to play many of the game's 500 characters.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will launch in early 2021 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
