Returning to our reality for a bit, here comes some very positive news for fans of Cyberpunk 2077, one of the most highly anticipated games of the cyberpunk genre in recent memory. Over the last week, the lead quest designer Pawel Sasko from CD Project Red was interviewed by Polish news outlet Spider's Web. After being translated, it was revealed that players will have the freedom play the game their own way, including the possibility to finish the game even after just minimal exploration of the main storyline.

"So in the Cyberpunk's structure we have this wheat spike, which serves as it's center, the main storyline with different subplots surrounding it, which can be triggered in a various ways. Those subplots allow us to do something that we have never done before, they change the main plot of the game and they are doing that in such a way that you may not even finish the main plot, but still finish the game and get a completely different epilogue than the player with a different life-path who made different choices, met different characters and formed relationships with them."

The protagonist will only have one of three possible starting points as either a nomad, a street urchin, or a corporation wage slave. From there, the protagonist would move along the story to meet an ex-gang member, with various circumstances and relationship results depending on previously chosen starting points. Additionally, there will be 75+ sidequests available to players almost straight from the get-go.

The current setting is based on original game designer Mike Pondsmith's 1988 release Cyberpunk 2020, a pen-and-paper RPG. Pondsmith has been very much involved with the game's direction and set pieces, one of which was recently revealed via a few teases that CD Project Red dropped on Twitter. Pictured above is one of the area known as Westbrook, and within that is North Oak, where the rich and wealthy hang up their stylized jackets and slick designer shoes alongside Night City's celebrities. Formerly known for bits and pieces of high-life crime, all of that has been quelled (at least publicly) by privately-owned security firms and forces.

Walking the streets and sidewalks of this visual landscape, players will be hard-pressed to find a hint or hair of gangs, at least at first glance. Like many things in the city of the future, if you look hard enough, you will find the dirt. Driving around in armored vehicles or walking with numerous bodyguards is just how folks up in the high life are. Upon taking a short walk over to the aptly named Japantown, however, one may notice the lurking of some infamous thugs. We are talking about the Yakuza, of course. (No, we are not talking about the absurd yet comical Yakuza from gaming series Yakuza.) These Yakuza families that own many a legal and illegal gambling den roam around the area. So one may expect to possibly lose a bit more than some fingers the choice to cross paths with them is taken.

Though Pondsmith has stated that much has changed in the city over the course of time since we last held a glimpse at it in Cyberpunk Red, which took place in 2045, the next release of the pen-and-paper book shall be canonical with that game and, as such, could be a major crossing point for new blood into the rising tabletop RPG community. Since resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons in recent years, the hobby has seen never-before-recorded amounts of people taking up books and character sheets than ever before.

Here's to hoping that it is at least better than Cyberpunk V3.0, which had a terrible setting change and odd art splats.
