The Nintendo Switch eShop saw another 55 new games released over the last 7 days, and I’ve picked 4 indies that stood out from the rest.
Grapple Dog
Released: 10 February 2022
Price: AU$19.95 / US$14.99 / GB£11.99 + 10% additional launch discount in the Americas only
Genre: Platformer / Arcade / Action / Adventure
Developer: Medallion Games
Publisher: Super Rare Originals
Jump, swing, and zip your way through 6 colourful worlds in this 2D action-platformer as Pablo, the Grapple Dog!
Why this excites me
It seems that every week there’s another cutesy, indie platformer (should we call it parkour to make it cool?) to add to our collections, and Grapple Dog continues this trend impeccably.
With a bold, vibrant pixel art aesthetic, underwater zones that don’t suck and a fluid grapple hook mechanic that’s incredibly fun (unlike Axiom Verge’s), creator Joseph Gribbin looks to have perfected his trademark style to make the best game of his career to date.
OlliOlli World
Released: 08 February 2022
Price: AU$44.95 / US$29.99 / GB£24.99
Genre: Action / Platformer / Sports / Arcade
Developer: Roll7
Publisher: Private Division
OlliOlli World is a bold new skateboarding action-platformer that’s bursting with personality.
Flip and flow through the vivid and vibrant world of Radlandia, meeting colourful characters as you grind, trick, and air your way to discover the mystical skate gods on your quest for Gnarvana.
Why this excites me
OlliOlli World is the third entry in the critically acclaimed OlliOlli series from Roll7, with the first two released as a combined package in OlliOlli: Switch Stance.
From the beautiful, cartoony art style, the story, character customisation and intricate and expertly crafted level design, OlliOlli World takes what made the previous games great and improves on them in every way.
You’ll be flipping and grinding like the silkiest of pros in no time.
Skautfold: Shrouded in Sanity
Released: 11 February 2022
Price: AU$15.00 / US$9.99 / GB£8.99
Genre: Action / Adventure
Developer: Pugware
Publisher: RED ART GAMES
Set in an alternative historical setting of 1897 Britannia, you’ve risen from the dead as a contract killer sent to eliminate the source of the unnatural fog that’s enveloping Berelai Manor.
Why this excites me
Skautfold: Shrouded in Sanity is a hard as nails, Lovecraftian, survival action-horror game inspired by Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Eternal Darkness, albeit presented in a gory 2D which sort of reminds me of the Amiga classic, Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight. Right up my alley!
Seemingly barely noticed upon its Steam release in 2016, it has now found its way to the Switch, where it will hopefully garner much more attention and lead the way for the other 2 games in the series to be ported across. The only downside is that it’s twice as expensive as on Steam.
Welcome to Elk
Released: 10 February 2022
Price: AU$19.99 / US$14.99 / GB£11.99 + 20% additional launch discount
Genre: Adventure
Developer: Triple Topping
Publisher: Triple Topping
Welcome to Elk is a biographical adventure set on an island like no other, where every character you encounter has a story to tell.
Why this excites me
Wow, this is one hell of a narrative adventure game. It’s all about the power of storytelling. From the weird and wonderful to the dark and desperate, all of the tales are based on true stories.
You play as Frigg, a young carpenter trading their busy life in the city for an apprenticeship in a small town. Frigg worries that the slower pace of life will be boring but soon discovers nothing could be further from the truth!
While it looks “fun” and subscribes to that off-beat, quirky Cartoon Network style for the most part, it also has some very dark moments, so be warned if you’re sensitive to a whole range of things, including graphic violence.
Another week has passed, and my Best Of Switch indies list has seen another 4 additions, each one very different from the other. Did any pique your interest? Let me know!
