Australia and USA join New Zealand and France at Paris 2024
On Friday (31 March), Australia and the USA secured their places in the rugby sevens competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning their matches on the first day of the Hong Kong Sevens tournament. Four teams from the 2022/23 World Rugby Sevens Series were guaranteed a spot at the Olympics, with New Zealand having already qualified as table-toppers and France as the host nation. With just one tournament remaining on the women's circuit after Hong Kong, Australia and the USA cannot be overtaken in the standings.
The USA won their first two matches of the tournament, defeating Spain 35-7 and Japan 26-17, ensuring their advancement to the quarter-finals. They will play their final pool match on Saturday against France, who are also undefeated.
Australia had a flawless day, winning against Brazil 43-5 and Ireland 19-12. They will face Fiji, the only other unbeaten team, in their final pool match on Saturday to determine their quarter-final opponent. New Zealand is the only other team to have won both their matches on Friday
