Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important in the data-driven esports industry. The technology's applications range from assisting in odds-setting to flagging suspicious behaviour.

AI impact on esports betting

Artificial intelligence is no longer a science fiction concept; it is being used in fields ranging from e-commerce to architecture. Gambling requires both luck and preparation. Real-time statistics about esports players, teams, and events are now available to bookmakers, informing betting odds and providing context to bettors.

AI can rapidly process massive amounts of data and make accurate predictions. In League of Legends, for example, PandaScore's AI platform collects 300 data points in half a second. The system continuously learns from history and incoming data to provide the most up-to-date breakdowns and predictions about who will win, lose, complete specific tasks, and so on.

Because of its digital nature, esports is more data-driven than traditional sports, creating a demand for advanced artificial intelligence in the industry. Power Rankings with Watson, an AI-powered method of evaluating player and team performance in the Overwatch League, were recently introduced by IBM. GRID constantly analyses game play and displays vital information to viewers such as weapon load-outs, spells, and the location of the last kill.

AI can detect risky betting behaviours and illegal operations in addition to odds and predictions. Esports Technologies recently became an anti-corruption supporter of the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC). Esports Technologies will use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect and eliminate match-fixing and corrupt betting patterns in esports.

Esports Technologies AI generator

Esports Technologies has recently filed a provisional patent application for a technology that uses AI to generate odds models for use in an esports betting algorithm. The system would allow bettors to place bets on teams at any time during a tournament or game. Examples of use cases include predicting which team will finish in the top three, which team will finish outside the top five, and which round the team will reach.

Machine learning and advanced quantitative methods would be used to generate odds in real time. This method could be applied to a variety of esports match and tournament types, as well as different stages of the event. The technology could be used to make proposition bets and could be used in a variety of betting markets.

In addition, Esports Technologies filed a patent in June for a proprietary live streaming technology platform that integrates sports and esports wagering across popular streaming platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and even Hulu.

In May, the company released its own app, Esports Games. Users can predict the outcome of live esports match events such as "which team gets the first kill in the match" in the free-to-play interactive tournament prediction and trivia game.

What’s next for AI and esports betting?

Make no mistake about it: the $1 billion (£737 million) esports industry is well aware of its gambling potential. Similarly, the gaming and betting industries have witnessed the appeal of competitive video games to young bettors. Having said that, artificial intelligence will play a larger role in both industries in order to provide the best services and prevent fraud.

Tabcorp, Australia's gambling operator, will reportedly use AI to expand its sports wagering operations. The platform will ostensibly provide large-scale opportunities for predicting NFL game outcomes and providing sports bettors with more elements to wager on.
