10 of the Worst Superhero Video Games of All Time
There have been many superhero movies as of late and even more video games. But not all of them are great. Here are the worst superhero video games ever made.
Superhero movies have received the bulk of Hollywood attention. But before all of the special effects and funding were even a possibility, there were video games. But not every game or movie translates over to the other platform well.
There have been many quality superhero games recently, with theBatman Arkham games standing out for its playability and openness. But dating back to the beginning of video games, there's been some horrible examples. Here are the worst superhero video games ever made.
This is considered not just one of the worst superhero video games ever made, it's one of the worst games in general. Part of the game's downfall is its terrible storyline. Lex Luthor traps Superman inside a virtual Metropolis and forces you to fly through golden rings and mazes. Not only are the controls horrible and bulky, Superman isn't even able to fight anybody, making for a really boring and uneventful game for the N64.
Batman had some great games with Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, but before that, there was a string of terrible games. This Gamecube and Xbox game had horrible controls and camera angles that made it difficult to play, despite the decent graphics. This game eventually won the "Shame of the Month" award from Electronic Gaming Monthly.
Catwoman was a terrible movie and also one of the worst superhero video games. Catwoman featured awkward camera angles, making it difficult to do just about anything. The controls are also notoriously bad, with major accuracy issues when flicking the whip. Halle Berry may be sexy in the film but unfortunately does not carry over to the game for any redeeming qualities.
Aquaman has always been the forgotten superhero. The game is just a complete bore, as you spend time swimming through the oceans fighting deep sea divers and defusing bombs.
The game also features no voiceovers, only utilizing old-fashioned text boxes for conversations and the story. Again, camera angles are an issue here as well with finicky controls, making it one of the worst superhero video games.
Poor Hulk. The Incredible Hulk never received a good movie or game until the recent Avengers installments and this is one of the worst superhero video games. In this game, you spend most of your time punching your way through boxes and robots in a laboratory.
Although it was 1996 and didn't have the same kind of graphics we have now, the blockiness is unbearable. The fixed camera angle doesn't help either.
This game was just a total disaster, featuring ugly animations and game textures. The common thread here is games' janky camera angles and the way it interferes with the gameplay.
Spawn was full of glitches, including when walls would suddenly disappear and you could throw people through different objects. Gamespot even gave this game an infamous 1.8 review.
This X-Men game for the NES features horrible graphics and meaningless tasks. In the game, you rarely fight enemies but run into other opponents like spiders, robots, and mice, making for a boring superhero game. Another annoying aspect of the game is how your health is drained when you use your mutant powers. This is one of the first worst superhero video games made.
Here's another NES game that was just a disaster and one of the worst superhero video games. Silver Surfer never received much fan fare and it showed as Silver Surfer frustrated anyone who played it. This game is one of the most difficult games to play, even making the first level almost unbeatable. Even if the most mundane things like rubber ducks hit you once, you die. Silver Surfer looks as painful as it is to play.
This game had a decent story but was an awful Marvel game from Sega. Thor scored a 39 rating from Metacritic, noting its "joyless" gameplay, making it one of the worst superhero video games. Though Thor received a bit of a renaissance lately with the movies, its games never seemed to take off.
Often considered the worst Batman game, you don't even get to play as Bruce Wayne in this game. You play as a teenager who takes over for Wayne in his old age. For most of the game, you unlock identical looking corridors while fighting thugs and robots. Batman Beyond just feels very monotonous.
