United Nations Day 2021: Introduction

United Nations Day is observed annually on 24th October. It marks the anniversary of the founding day of the UN Charter(founding document of the UN). The UN Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco but came into force on 24th October 1945 and the United Nations came to be known as an International Organisation.

The United Nations Day is a vital international event as it is the founding day of an organisation whose primary goal is to maintain peace and security throughout the entire globe. Around 193 countries are connected to the United Nations and being the centre of coordination it helps in developing friendly relations amongst nations.

History of United Nations Day

  • The term United Nations was first initiated by President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 during the Second World War. And was used during the declaration of the United States on 1st January 1942.
  • On October 24th, the ratification of the UN Charter was done by the majority of its signatories including the permanent members of its security council and the United Nations was established.
  • At the time of its establishment there were only 51 members associated with it. And now 193 members are associated with it.
  • This day was observed for the first time on 24th October 1948.

United Nations Day 2021 Theme

The theme for this year’s United Nations Day being declared by the United Nations is “Building Back Together for Peace and Prosperity”. All the celebrations will be done to highlight this theme.

United Nations Day Celebrations

Every year the United Nations Day is celebrated by organising a concert at the General Assembly Hall at the headquarters of the UN at New York. The same is followed this year also and this year’s format will be a hybrid format including some live performances and some pre-recorded performances with very less audience following social distancing.

Stand up performances will be given by Violinists Angela and Jennifer Chun along with soprano Youngok Shin at General Assembly Hall, at the UN Headquarters in New York. Along with this Soprano Youngmi Kim, the Goyang Philharmonic Orchestra, pianist Yungwook Yoo and all-female K-POP band Aespa’s pre recorded video will be played during the concert. The concert will take place on 21st October at 7pm EST and is being sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations.

The current Secretary-General of the UN, and the ninth occupant of the post, is Mr. António Guterres of Portugal, who took office on 1 January 2017. The UN Charter describes the Secretary-General as “chief administrative officer” of the Organization.

The UN is always at front in organising international events for generating awareness about any social cause, any life threatening disease, always running after equality, etc. and always working in the best interest of the public.
