Optical fiber is a man-made fiber optic cable system using light to transfer data. The technology was invented in 1865, and the first commercial systems were introduced into the market in 1954. It remained a niche tool for data transmission until the 1980s, because of the high cost of light transmission. This changed in the early 2000s, when the technology was used for high-speed internet, mobile phone service and other applications. By the end of 2004, fiber optic cables were spreading across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.

The basic construct of an optical fiber is a hollow glass tube that has three concentric rings on the inside. The light ray that passes through the tube is refracted or bent by the rays of light in the surrounding space. The beams of light are recombined at the other end of the cable and then sent as digital or analog signals to either computers or another optical fiber.
