Who would be the ruling monarch of the United States if George Washington had been crowned King? The following outlines the line of succession had the United States instituted a monarchy.

But, of course, George Washington would not hear of it and chose democracy and country over personal power. A lesson worth remembering.

But for fun, let’s say he was named King George I. He would have ruled until his death in 1799. Then, having no children of his own, the crown would have passed to his oldest brother’s first son, William Washington. And we would have had King William I.

King William I would have ruled until his death in 1810. Then, his eldest son Bushrod would have ascended to the throne as Bushrod I.

Bushrod the First would become the longest-serving monarch up to that point. He would faithfully serve his country for the next twenty-one years. But sadly, he would pass away in 1831, and the crown would go to Spotswood I. (I don’t name them; I just report on them.)

Not wanting to be outdone by his father, Spotswood I, would serve for thirty-four years. In 1865 he would be succeeded by Bushrod II.

Bushrod II would take his turn as the longest-ruling American monarch by staying on the throne for fifty-three years. Well short of Queen Elizabeth II, but still quite a run. In 1918 we would have our first Queen Estella I.

Estella I, who had no children, would rule until 1931. At which time she would pass the crown to her cousin Lee I.

Lee I would be King until 1969. Then his daughter would become Queen Odell I.

Odell would rule until 2000. The crown would then pass to our current monarch, Queen Brynda I.

While it is commonly believed that George Washington turned down the offer to become King, it should be noted that most historians claim that this did not happen. And a monarchy was never seriously considered as a form of government for The United States of America.

Still, there seems to be an interest in everything that has to do with the English Monarchy. Maybe we should have our own ceremonial royal family. A real-life reality show with Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses, Dukes, Earls, Lords, and all the rest. Or maybe our movie stars and professional athletes already serve that purpose.

The list of possible royalty for the United States is purely speculative and is for entertainment purposes only. None of the people listed are/or have ever been members of the monarchy. The United States of America is a representative democracy. George Washington was not only the first President of the United States but also the first President in the history of the world. A far nobler title than King.

Fascinating! I love 'what if' kind of scenarios. Great read and well-written :)

  • Interesting concept and an enjoyable read

  • This was very interesting. But what would have made it a little bit better is if you would have done just a little bit more of a dive into each successive monarch such as maybe their full name first and last name, where they live, the type of work they do, etc. Otherwise very very good.

  • Interesting read! Thankyou💕
