Peng Jiamu, formerly known as Peng Jiamu, was born in 1925. His father wanted a harmonious family, so he named him "Peng Jiamu".

He graduated from the Agricultural College of Nanjing Central University in 1947, and worked as a graduate student in Shanghai Biochemistry in 1956, but he gave up the opportunity to study abroad and took the initiative to exercise in the frontier. In a letter to Guo Moruo, he wrote:

"I voluntarily go to the frontier, this is a long-cherished wish! . . . I have the courage to step out of the wilderness."

At the same time, he also changed his name to "Peng Jiamu", determined to add grass and trees to the frontier!

What courage and determination is this!

Later, he used his actions to practice this solemn oath.

In 1957, Peng Jiamu was found to have a malignant tumor, but for his scientific research dream, he resolutely gave up treatment.

At that time, he was the vice president of the Xinjiang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the captain of the comprehensive scientific research team in Lop Nur.

From 1964 to 1979, the scientific expedition team led by Peng Jiamu went to Lop Nur three times. By collecting water and mineral samples, they found that the vicinity of Lop Nur is rich in potassium. This was undoubtedly great news for China at that time.

The team members were also deeply encouraged, and their enthusiasm for the scientific examination was even higher.

On June 5, 1980, Peng Jiamu and his party set off again, and their route was as follows:

Shanshan - the ancient city of Loulan - across Lop Nur - (with mineral specimens) Milan farm.

After completing the established scientific expedition mission, he planned to return to Urumqi, but Peng Jiamu thought:

Since it's hard to come out, it's better to conduct another inspection.

So adjust a new route:

Milan Farm - Kumu Kuduk Desert - across Lop Nur.

However, this trip was not so smooth.

On June 11, they encountered wind and sand on their way to the Kumu Kuduk Desert. For three consecutive days, the sandstorms continued, and the expedition team's itinerary was greatly affected. They only traveled 150 kilometers, more than half of the distance from the Kumu Kuduk Desert.

The biggest problem, however, is that half of the water and gasoline you carry is consumed.

If the weather doesn't improve, their supplies will run out quickly. So, someone proposed to go back the same way.

However, Peng Jiamu firmly disagreed, because "Kumkuduk" means "manhole", and according to the records, there used to be spring water in this place. He is convinced that they can solve the water problem in situ.

So the expedition team moved on.

At noon on June 16, when the expedition team was about to reach the border of the Kumu Kuduk Desert, they had little water and gasoline left. A desert. The only way is to request helicopter support from nearby troops.

However, Peng Jiamu believes that it would cost 2,000 yuan to fly a helicopter once an hour. It takes several hours to fly from the nearby garrison base to Kumu Kuduk, and a trip to transport water costs 10,000 yuan, which is too expensive.

He wanted to find as much water as possible before the troops sent it. But after a while of tossing, there is still no fresh water to drink.

Finally, I had to send a telegram to the nearest base:

"We have reached 10 kilometers west of Kumu Kuduk, we are short of oil and water, and the current water can only last until tomorrow."

At 11:00 a.m. on June 17, the scientific expedition team received a call back:

"Similarly send supplies and stand by in place."

When the team members were going to report the good news to Peng Jiamu, they disappeared. Only found a note in the map that Peng Jiamu carried on the table:

I went east to find the well.

In addition, he took a black and white camera, a water bottle, and a small bag containing a flashlight, a compass and candy. And the medicine he had been taking was still on the table. It seems that he did not intend to go far, it is estimated that he just went out to have a look.

4 hours have passed, and everyone still hasn't waited for Peng Jiamu's return. So we split up to find. According to the footprints left in the desert, it has been traced to a saline-alkali land. At this point, the footprints disappeared.

When it got dark, the expedition team fired a flare every half hour, hoping that Peng Jiamu, who had lost his way, could return to the camp according to the direction of the flare. However, still to no avail.

15 hours later, the scientific expedition team had no choice but to send a telegram to the garrison:

"At 19:30 a.m. on June 17, Peng Jiamu, a member of my scientific expedition team, went out alone to find water and has not returned yet."

In the following dozens of days, more than a dozen military vehicles, 3 helicopters, and even Shanghai police were dispatched to participate in the search and rescue, but Peng Jiamu was still not found.

Finally failed.

There have been various opinions about the secret of Peng Jiamu's disappearance.

On October 11, 1980, a well-known newspaper in Hong Kong reported an explosive news:

Peng Jiamu appeared in the United States. When an acquaintance saw it, he refused to admit it.

After a series of investigation and analysis, it was finally judged that this was just a rumor designed by a person with ulterior motives.

Five months later, in order to completely quell various discussions and rumors, the relevant departments once again organized a search and rescue team to find Peng Jiamu. The desert in the Kumu Kuduk area was almost turned upside down, and there was still no progress.

Finally, the Shanghai Municipal Government officially awarded Peng Jiamu the title of "Revolutionary Martyr".

So where is Peng Jiamu?

According to peer analysis,

At that time, Peng Jiamu was suffering from cancer. In addition, he was tired from running around for a long time. When he went out to find water, he fell down because of lack of energy. That was when the dust storm was at its worst. Once a person falls, he is quickly covered by wind and sand. Therefore, it is difficult for any search and rescue team to find him.

The possibility of such a death is the greatest.

Another guess is that when the sandstorm blows, Peng Jiamu may choose to hide in the nearby Yadan cave, but the sparse cave can't stand the raging sand and may collapse, burying Peng Jiamu inside.

For many years later, the scientific expedition to find Peng Jiamu has never stopped. After a series of comparisons, and even DNA identification with immediate family members, they all ended in failure.

To this day, whether Peng Jiamu's remains can be found is not very important.

But his devotion to the frontier and the spirit of devoting himself to science has always encouraged future generations to keep moving forward.
