Indonesia is one of the countries that has a lot of ghost characters in various mystical tales. In this article, we will discuss the popular ghost called wewe gombel which comes from Javanese and Madurese tribal stories in Indonesia.

The name varies but refers to the same figure with a slight difference, some call it wewe gombel, Kolong wewe, nenek gombel while the madura tribe calls it biebih.

This mystical story comes from the island of Java. The Madurese tribe on the island of origin is not well known for this mystical figure. As the story is told in the Madurese community, it is more commonly found in the Madurese community living on the island of Java. Because the island of Java itself is also inhabited by the Madurese tribe and some cities are actually the majority of the Madurese tribe even though they are on the island of Java.

Depiction of her figure.

This ghost is said to take the form of a middle-aged woman or grandmother who has large and stretchy breasts. Her hair is long black and messy and she does not wear a pakayan. While in various films in the modern era she is depicted as a motherly woman who wears a dress like a negligee that is worn out and torn a lot. Her long black hair is messy and her breasts are large and stretched to the point of hanging from her chest.

Her behaviour.

This ghost is said to like to kidnap small children whose parents neglect to supervise their children. But he is not evil and will actually return the child if the parents are aware of their negligence. small children, especially small children who have never removed their milk teeth, are the target of this wewe gombel ghost.
And it is said that small children who like to be stubborn. Quietly leaving the house at night without telling their parents is also a target of this ghost.

There is a slight difference between the stories of the past and the modern era about the nature of this ghost.

If in the past it was said that he would return the child he kidnapped while in the modern era it was told

If a child is missing and suspected of being kidnapped by this female ghost, then a group of adults must look for him by calling the child's name while carrying various kitchen utensils such as pans pots and others while being hit hard.

This ghost story is passed down orally from generation to generation and undergoes various additional definitions that are composed by the speakers. This ghost figure is usually used as a scary specter as a material to scare small children in rural Java so as not to go out at night without the supervision of parents or adults.

Sometimes small children like to play without thinking about the time even though it is late at night.

Back in my childhood. Often when it's getting late. We children who were playing together were told to return to our respective homes to immediately bathe or else we would be kidnapped by this wewe gombel ghost.

Regarding this ghost. The author has his own story.

Back when I was in elementary school. I had a classmate who was a girl.

I was not very familiar with her only to the extent of knowing because of classmates. But she quit school since the fourth grade of elementary school. She was two years away from graduating from that school. The story of a friend whose house was close to her, she had disappeared in the abduction of wewe gombel and was found under a tree with a lot of bushes. It is said that since the incident, there has been a change in his character. He became a loner and rarely spoke until he did not return to school.
The author himself does not believe the story as a fact, but I deliberately include it here as an example of how this ghost story circulates in the village community.

Myths about creepy figures can be found in various cultures. What about your place, is there a ghost like this?
