If you were a renowned musician, especially from the 60s-80s, the temptations of the road were never far away. Many iconic names became renowned just as much for their off-stage decadence as they were for their music.

For many musicians, drugs were an escape from the rigours of a grueling schedule, a tool to keep them functional or even as an asset to their creative process. It took years for many of these legends to get themselves back together again while a noticeable number were not so lucky and died long before their time.

However, even at the height of such a lifestyle, there have been a few notable names who personified the rock star image without ever succumbing to the lifestyle. In this list, we will look at 8 iconic musicians who did not do drugs.

Angus Young

Despite being the wildest looking member of AC/DC, Angus Young was the only one among his bandmates to have avoided drugs and alcohol for the entirety of his career. Image: Ultimateguitar.com

A founding member of AC/DC, Angus Young has remained the same to this very day. With his rough appearance consisting of a school uniform and his wild onstage presence, many would believe that he’d had to be under the influence of something to keep going like that for so long.

However, unlike most of his fellow bandmates who did succumb to drink and drugs, Young has remained clean from the very beginning. Aside from keeping away from drugs, Young does not drink alcohol as well. Young himself had noted that if he ever needed an extra boost before a show, a glass of chocolate milk would do the trick.

Over four decades on from AC/DC’s formation, Young has not missed a single beat. Perhaps he can credit his lifestyle to not only preserving his life but also maintaining his health and ability on stage.

Ted Nugent

Although a controversial figure today, Ted Nugent is also a renowned musician who was among one of the first artists to promote a drug-free lifestyle. Image: Guitaralliance.com

While many know Ted Nugent today for his rather controversial political views and may or may not disagree with them, one thing that cannot be disputed is that he is one hell of a musician. Although he could hold his own on the mic, Nugent shone brightest when given a guitar.

Despite being heavily entrenched in the rock scene since the 60s and earning the nickname “The Motor City Madman,” Nugent avoided drugs, alcohol, and even cigarettes all his life. Just like with any of his other views, he made it a point to publicly advertise his stance.

An early pioneer of the Straight Edge movement, Nugent was among the first musicians who publicly advocated a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle. Whether you love him or not, Ted Nugent was the first person that showed you could be a badass musician even without substances.

Henry Rollins

Having tried drugs as a youngster out of curiosity, Henry Rollins did not like them and has remained drug free throughout his entire career. An icon of hardcore punk, Rollins embodies the genre’s Straight Edge stance. Image: Wikimedia Commons

Inspired by Ted Nugent’s music and anti-drug views, Henry Rollins was the frontman of Black Flag from 1981–1986. An icon of hardcore punk, Rollins personified the genre better than most who have come before or since.

Hardcore punk carried an anti-authoritarian message and makes an effort to depart from the mainstream. Thus, drugs were heavily discouraged in that scene. Rollins, who had experimented with substances before becoming a musician, took a shine to the Straight Edge lifestyle and has stayed clean throughout his entire career.

Although Rollins’ abstinence arose from the movement he was part of, it has since grown into just one of many parts of his incredibly disciplined lifestyle. Aside from his sobriety, Rollins avoids most meats, only eats fish, and even abstains from relationships.

Frank Zappa

Long before hardcore punk sought to challenge the mainstream, no musician embodied counter-culture as well as Frank Zappa. Outspoken and controversial, Zappa’s music was experimental and his lyrics were vulgar even by today’s standards. So much so, that even his purely instrumental albums were sold with parental warnings attached to them.

In spite of this, nobody could deny that Zappa was a talented musician and an intelligent man. Zappa was an accomplished guitarist who loved to push the limits of music. He was also one of the earliest musicians to find success across multiple genres. When not making music, Zappa fiercely advocated for free speech and was a harsh critic of censorship.

Despite his rather unkempt appearance and eccentric demeanor, Zappa was well known for his abstinence from alcohol and drugs. While disapproving of drugs himself, Zappa did not agree with punishing others for using them.

Although sober, Zappa had his addictions albeit legal ones. A heavy smoker, Zappa was also known for his dependence on caffeine. Thus, unlike others on this list, Zappa’s abstinence from drugs did not make him any healthier.

Bruce Springsteen

Thanks to his abstinence from drugs and commitment to healthy life, The Boss looks and sounds almost similar as he did back in his heyday over four decades ago

One of the originators of the heartland rock genre, Bruce Springsteen won the adoration of legions of fans thanks to his everyman image and relatable lyrics. In many ways, Springsteen seemed no different than the average man, and therein lay his appeal.

Springsteen’s persona was no act and he indeed lived a rather conventional off-stage life. Despite his self-admitted struggles with depression and exhaustion over the years, Springsteen never gave into drugs or other bad habits.

Like many of his contemporaries, Springsteen has begun to experiment with healthy living. Maintaining a regular workout schedule and a mostly vegetarian diet, Springsteen could easily be mistaken for a man years younger. Perhaps we could credit his abstinence and healthy lifestyle to The Boss’s continued success.

Roger Daltrey

Although The Who was synonymous with the heavy drug use in the music industry, it’s frontman Roger Daltrey never used drugs at all. Refusing to take some and unable to tolerate others, Daltrey’s abstinence allows him to continue a fruitful over a half century later. Image: Ultimateclassicrock.com

Roger Daltrey was the frontman of The Who, a group that personified the sex, drugs and rock n roll lifestyle that have become the stuff of legend.

Lumped in with the likes of Keith Moon whose antics included trashing hotel rooms and blowing up toilets with explosives, and John Entwsitle, a man whose tolerance for drugs was so high that he was nicknamed “The Ox”, you wouldn’t be remiss to think that Daltrey was at least briefly caught up in it.

Surprisingly, Daltrey himself has said that he has never even done so much as try hard drugs in his over five-decade long career. Having lost his bandmates and close friends to drugs, Daltrey vowed to never try cocaine. Advised by a friend to stick only to pot, Daltrey found that he could not even tolerate secondhand smoke and chose to avoid marijuana and cigarettes.

It was a well known fact that at Who concerts, Daltrey would ask fans to put out their cigarettes and to not smoke marijuana near him as the smoke made it difficult for him to breathe and sing. Although his own physical intolerance to drugs may have contributed, Daltrey’s ability to stay drug-free when he was at the very center of that lifestyle is a testament to his amazing self-discipline.

Bruce Dickinson

Able to keep his career separate from the rest of his life, Bruce Dickinson found it easy to avoid the use of drugs. Living a self-described “boring” life offstage, Dickinson and Iron Maiden save the parties for their shows. Image: Livewire.com

As the frontman of Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson is a legend of heavy metal. As it was with most musical genres of the time, the heavy metal scene was as decadent as the others. Drugs and dysfunction had plagued earlier groups like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. However, Iron Maiden did their best to keep away from substances.

While the various members have overcome their struggles, Dickinson is noted for having stayed sober throughout his entire run. When asked about why he never succumbed to drugs, Dickinson attributed his abstinence to an ability to separate his career as a musician from the rest of his life. In fact, he has done this so well that he even worked as a commercial pilot for many years.

Despite admitting that both his and his bandmates’ personal lives are indeed somewhat boring, Dickinson also credits their stability off-stage for allowing them to continue to put on amazing, high energy live shows. As Dickinson so eloquently puts it, the aim of Iron Maiden is to have a party onstage and not behind the scenes.

Gene Simmons

Despite his demonic stage persona and reputation for womanising, Gene Simmons has never tried drugs out of his desire to not upset his mother. Image: CNN

A longtime member of Kiss, Gene Simmons is perhaps more well known for his face paint, blood spitting theatrics, bass playing and exceptionally long tongue. Perhaps The Demon’s most memorable “achievement” is his claim to have slept with over 4000 women.

Behind all that however, Simmons is perhaps less well-known for his lifelong sobriety. Avoiding drugs, alcohol and even cigarettes, Simmons’ sobriety comes with a heartwarming story. The only child of a Holocaust survivor and single mother, Simmons was aware of the horrors his mother had endured and vowed to never do anything to upset or worry her.

Aside from his own personal vow to avoid intoxicating substances, Simmons has also mentioned his own dislike for the taste of alcohol. In fact, he claims that he has never been drunk in his life and will only have one sip of a drink on social occasions.

Perhaps Gene Simmons is the best example to show that the rockstar lifestyle does not require one to always indulge in sex, drugs and rock n roll. Although in Simmons’ case he may have compensated for the lack with drugs with a bit more sex and of course some good music too.

That does it for this list. If you made it this far, let me just say how appreciative I am that you took the time to read this.

I’m sure there may be a few names I might have missed out and if so I’d love to know who these other musicians are. Until then, take care!
