There are times when war develops within a single country rather than between states. There are numerous causes for civil wars. Political, religious, or even political division can cause a nation to fall apart. These are situations where the population could genuinely be affected by the brutal civil conflicts of the modern era. In addition to impeding advancement, this might result in violations of human rights.

It is typical for nations that have fought these kinds of battles to experience negative economic and social effects. Regrettably, these wars may last for several years or even decades. Here are some recent, deadly civil wars.

List of most brutal civil wars of the modern era

What was the most brutal modern civil war? What was the most recent civil war? Listed below are the top bloody civil wars of modern history.

  • Bosnian War
  • There are some nations that are poised to explode. This is precisely what happened in Bosnia in the early 1990s. We witnessed the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. Bosnia, a country with a variety of cultures, is currently engaged in a civil war. In fact, several human rights activists have referred to it as ethnic cleansing.

Bosnia, Herzegovina, and other former Yugoslav countries all declared war on one another. In 1992, Bosnian Serbs targeted mostly the Muslim populace. More than three years passed during this civil war. There are thought to have been between 90,000 and 300,000 casualties overall.

The nationalist Croats and Serbs attacked the countryside which can be considered ethnic cleansing. The problem was only resolved by the UN after air strikes and sanctions. In the end, both parties agreed to enter a peace treaty.

  • Sectarian Violence in Pakistan
  • Attacks against various organizations are ongoing in Pakistan. Sunni, Shia, Ahmad, Hindu, and Christian communities are the usual targets. 4,000 people died in sectarian violence between Shia and Sunni alone between 1987 and 2007. The TTP, Sunni Militant Organizations, and even ISIS have been accused of carrying out sectarian attacks.

  • Islamic Resistance and Communism in the Philippines

The Philippine armed conflicts with communist guerrillas and Muslims are another that made it onto our list of terrible civil wars of the contemporary period. Armed conflict is not unfamiliar to the Philippines. The Philippine government is battling a number of militants.

To give you some context for the insurgencies taking place in the Philippines, it is possible to trace them all back to the period of Martial Law in the 1960s and 1970s. The Moro National Liberation Front and the Communist Party of the Philippines both came into existence virtually simultaneously. Both factions fought to overthrow a ruler while the Muslim insurgents also sought to break away from the nation. The majority of the shootings took place in rural areas. These insurgencies are still active in the nation today.

The nation has attempted to sign numerous accords in the past in an effort to maybe put an end to the shootings in the countryside. Yet, it has led to an increase in Islamist radicals, Muslim rebels, and a functioning communist guerrilla force.

  • Chinese Civil War

In the 1920s, the Chinese Civil War formally broke out. Yet, during the Second World War, Mao Ze Dong's communist party and Chiang Kai-government shek's made the decision to work together in order to defeat the Japanese occupiers.

Democracy was not a value held by Chang Kai-shek. Instead, he favours unifying China under a single leader who is supported by the military. Chiang Kai-shek used right-wing strategies to eliminate all forms of opposition, including communists, in China. Using the rural poor and uniting them in the fight against Chiang Kai-soldiers shek's was what Mao Ze Dong believed in. Taiwan had been established by the end of the Chinese Civil War.

What made the Chinese Civil War on our list of bloody civil wars in modern era is the protracted nature of its revolution that incurred 8 million casualties.

  • Sri Lankan Civil War

In 2011, UN released a report saying that the Sri Lankan Civil War has lost over 100,000 lives in a span of 26 years. The war was fought between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the local government of Sri Lanka.

War broke out in 1983 but didn't finish until the Tigers pondered giving up in 2009. Regrettably, 40,000 civilians have lost their lives in the battle, mostly in the previous five months. With such a high death toll, the Sri Lankan Civil War made our list of the most violent civil conflicts in contemporary history.

Despite the fact that Sri Lankans embraced peace, a number of issues persisted after the civil war. For instance, reestablishing the rule of law has proven to be rather challenging. However, investigations into alleged human rights breaches are still ongoing.
