Why Should I Be Excited for 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' on Disney+?

A common worry when asking about the Obi-Wan Kenobi series coming out on Disney+ is that it is going to be boring. Didn't Obi-Wan spend the time between Episode 3 and 4 of Star Wars on Tatooine just making sure nothing bad happened to Luke? If so, then the worst that could happen is an unfortunate event with a bounty hunter or a Krayt Dragon, and that could take two maybe three episodes, hardly a season. There is also NO WAY that Vader goes to Tatooine looking for anyone, because he hates the planet and believes that Padme died prior to giving birth to their children. It begs the question, what makes this series worth watching and how excited should I be?

1. Emotions

The emotions will greatly vary throughout this streaming series. We may get a flash back to Order 66 again, but beyond that we will get to dive deeper into the feelings and turmoil surrounding Obi-Wan. What will be the aftermath of the trauma caused by losing your whole life, your best friend who was practically your brother, and even your purpose of defending the Republic? What about the emotions that come from seeing the evil that Anakin is now participating in as a Sith? We also are sure that Obi-Wan is going to fight Darth Vader in this series and who knows what kinds of emotions will flare up in this rematch!

2. Obi-Wan

Yes, this seems elementary to think about, but even if you don’t just LOVE Obi-Wan as a character, Ewan McGregor perfectly played the character in the prequels. You could argue he was the highest point of those movies. Now we get to dive deeper into his Obi-Wan and see new dimensions of his character that McGregor and Disney bring to light. Those smart comments that make you laugh and make other characters roast always added a fun dimension to Star Wars, a role that many other characters simply couldn’t bring.

3. Live-Action Inquisitors

The jokes went off when we got the first trailer for the series, and the Grand Inquisitor did NOT look like he did in the Rebels series. That was a casting issue if anything because Rupert Friend just didn’t have the same shaped head as the cartoon adaptation of the Grand Inquisitor. For some, that is a big deal, but for others, they couldn’t care less. All of that aside, getting to see the Inquisitors in live action should be very entertaining. For someone like me, it could redeem what was a lame part of Star Wars in the Rebels series. I for one am excited to get to see them against a real Jedi Master in live action. That is unless they start flying away by their lightsabers.

4. Lightsaber duels

I put this after talking some about Darth Vader and the Inquisitors. Could this finally be when Disney gives Star Wars fans what they have been wanting from lightsaber duels? In the sequel trilogy they were big and wonky when they fought and untrained people beat people who had been trained to wield a saber. There were no real lightsaber duels in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett (although that duel between Moff Gideon and Din Djarrin was fun to watch). The lightsaber duel between Darth Maul and Ahsoka was amazing in Season 7 of Clone Wars. Now, between Obi-Wan, Darth Vader, and a slew of Inquisitors, surely, we will get a lightsaber duel worth mentioning.

5. Deborah Chow

Personally, I am a big fan of her past Star Wars work. While she does not have a long history directing Star Wars, she has worked on Marvel’s Jessica Jones. She directed two of the best episodes of The Mandalorian Season 1. She directed Chapter 3: The Sin and Chapter 7: The Reckoning.

Chapter 3 of The Mandalorian was an exciting episode featuring the rest of the Mandalorians helping Djarin escape Nevarro, after he turns on his former employer, the Empire (a sweet twist in itself). In Chapter 7, you have the epic appearance at the end by Moff Gideon, as he has the Mandalorian and his crew pinned inside the bar. Both episodes were exciting and high points in the first season of The Mandalorian. This gives us good reason to be excited about what Chow will bring to the table with Obi-Wan Kenobi, especially considering the nostalgic pieces she has to work with. Speaking of which, this brings us to the final reason to be excited for this series;

6. Nostalgia

Where to begin when talking about the nostalgia that will come with this series. Many nostalgic elements have already appeared in the trailer alone. No matter if you were raised on the original trilogy or the prequels, you will have all of the nostalgia alarms going off in your brain watching this series. For those who love Obi-Wan Kenobi and all that he stood for in the prequel trilogy, he will be working to fulfill his final mandate from Master Yoda, protecting and watching over young Luke Skywalker. According to reports, we will not only see Obi-Wan fighting Inquisitors (for those fans of Rebels and the Fallen Order video game), but Obi-Wan will also fight Darth Vader. Not to mention, I feel like by the end of the series, when Obi-Wan is off Tatooine at some point, he will either run into Maul or he will give Maul a clue as to where he will be at some point. This means that he will end up fighting him at some point before we have seen the last of Obi-Wan (you heard it here first).

All these things are just the beginning of reasons why we, as Star Wars fans, should be excited about this limited series from Disney. Personally, I give it 7 out of 10 Beans when it comes to the excitement level from me. I’m a big Obi-Wan fan to begin with, and imagining seeing Ewan McGregor back as the character makes me just as excited as hearing Duel of the Fates on the first trailer. The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are set to premier on Disney+ on May 29, 2022.
