Who Actually Knew About Padme And Anakin's Wedding In ‘Star Wars’ Episode II?

Besides Palpatine?

The planet: Naboo. The setting: a beautiful lake rests beneath a gorgeous mountain range. As the sun hits the water just right, a kiss signifies the starting point of one of the most complicated and iconic couplings in cinematic history. Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala are officially married.... unofficially. The question burning through some fans’ brains: who really knew about the forbidden romance between a senator from Naboo and a Jedi Knight?

Topping the list, of course, are C-3PO and R2-D2, who were one thousand percent aware of their compatriot’s relationship. As seen in the above photograph, the two iconic droids were at the wedding. But, of course, after the Clone Wars ended, C-3PO had his mind wiped. Unfortunately, however, Padme had long passed away by A New Hope, and Anakin was already deeply shrouded by the dark side.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is definitely one of the few who knew about his former Padawan marrying a senator. Evidence of this is shown at the peak of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The third and final film of the prequel trilogy dove deep into the mess of emotions flowing between Skywalker, Amidala, and Kenobi. After Order 66 is executed, resulting in the death of thousands of Jedi across the galaxy, Obi-Wan is forced to look for Anakin as he intends to put a stop to his dark deeds.

Kenobi turns to Padme, knowing that the two had grown close since Anakin was first adopted into the Jedi order all those years ago. Kenobi learns the truth, and Padme is left in denial. After he reveals to her he’s witnessed footage of Anakin killing younglings, Obi-Wan begins to leave but turns around to ask, “Anakin is the father, isn’t he?”. A pregnant Padme falls silent as tears begin to cover her face.

Clone Trooper 7567, also known as Captain Rex, was definitely in on the secret. At the height of the Clone Wars, Jedi General Anakin Skywalker repeatedly made calls to his wife via holonet, and let’s face it, it’s a lot easier to keep a secret marriage hidden if the guy you’re spending all your time with is in on it. Captain Rex covered for Anakin and Padme on at least one occasion before their barely-sanctioned mission to Skako Minor.

When questioned by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, the clone trooper told the general that Skywalker was merely “spot-checking” his armor to make sure everything was in tip-top shape for the battles to come. But this little white lie didn’t even come close to fooling Kenobi as he later went on to say, “I hope you at least told Padme I said hello.” It’s safe to say Rex truly cared about Skywalker and Amidala and would do what he could to help maintain normalcy around other troopers and Jedi.

There most likely were a few people—a part of Senator Amidala’s security detail—who knew of the two’s relationship. Most notably, Gregar Typho, captain of the Royal Naboo Security Forces during the Separatist Crisis and the Clone Wars and the former queen’s head of security, was most likely aware of the union. Typho had spent a great portion of his career fighting alongside Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, usually defending Padme from some sort of Separatist plot.

So it wouldn’t be totally impossible for the couple to let Typho in on the secret just for the sake of them not having to be completely secretive at all times. The same could be said for Teckla Minnau, Padme’s handmaiden. So again, having someone you spend all your time withholding one of your biggest secrets is definitely a good way to keep a secret relationship hidden, in case Anakin or Padme need to make up some sort of an excuse to see each other.

As much as we all adore our favorite Gungan, it’s probably a good bet to say Jar Jar Binks was unaware of the wedding. Anakin and Padme clearly cared for Jar Jar due to their many years of service with the bombad warrior, but Jar Jar isn’t exactly the first person who should be told secrets based on his inability to stay quiet. Jar Jar always has the best intentions, but sometimes the clumsy, loveable underwater-dweller just doesn’t know any better.

Senator Bail Organa, who would later go on to adopt Padme and Anakin’s daughter, Leia, was likely aware of the relationship. Organa and Amidala were not only senators who repeatedly supported each other in politics but were, without a doubt, very good friends. During the Clone Wars, the two were constantly under fire, either politically or literally, and almost every time, Skywalker was there to investigate. It would be very plausible to say Organa was very much aware of the relationship since he was so involved in each other’s lives during all those years. Especially considering he was present for Padme’s death and her children’s simultaneous birth. With the drama and emotional turmoil, Organa, without a doubt, also knew that Anakin Skywalker had turned to the Dark Side and become none other than Darth Vader.

Wrapping up the list is Ahsoka Tano. At the start of The Clone Wars, the battle for Christophsis was raging on, and supply lines were dangerously close to shutting down. The Jedi council sends a messenger to the planet’s surface to inform Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, about the danger their cruisers face. At this moment, Skywalker is first Introduced to Ahsoka, his new Padawan. Ahsoka was never fully told about the situation, but after spending so many days and nights alongside her master on the battlefield and countless more with Padme in the Senate building, she most likely picked up on the tension between the two.

Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala were on of the most iconic and influential couples throughout fiction. The two would spend nearly a decade fighting their own emotions to succumb to their feelings and finally marry. Ultimately, Anakin’s relationship with Padme would be one of many reasons for his horrific turn to the dark side.
