We Might Have A New Force Dyad Coming From 'Star Wars: The High Republic'

With The High Republic story initiative moving into its second month, there’s been a lot of new Star Wars canon content to soak in regards to its narrative world, with releases in the first phase, The Light of The Jedi, continuing to fill in some of the larger gaps of what the galaxy was like over 200 years prior to the Skywalker saga. In a new comic series, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures, published by IDW and written by Daniel José Older with art provided by Harvey Tolibao, we follow Yoda and some Padawans as they travel system to system, helping to aid numerous planets in the wake of the Great Disaster. Within the pages of the first issue, one of the key plot points references at length in the final film of the sequel trilogy might in fact be getting explored further: Force dyads.

A Force dyad, for those not in the know, is essentially two beings connected as one through the Force, like two halves of a greater whole. In the sequel trilogy, this dyad was shared by Kylo Ren (aka Ben Solo) and Rey. It is shown in both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, with multiple instances where the two are able to interact with each other directly, even passing objects to one another, even when they are lightyears apart. In the latter film, Kylo Ren reveals this revelation to Rey, as well as her true identity as the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine. Having found a way to survive his death in Return of the Jedi through cloning and dark side Force magic, Darth Sidious, seeing Rey and Ben united against him, states that their dyad is something that is extremely rare in the Force, and that one of their strength has not been seen for generations

While the two manage to team up to overpower Sidious at the climax of the film, it comes at a high price, with Rey succumbing to her wounds, and then being resurrected by Ben, only for him to die in her stead. While we don’t know what this means for Rey moving forward, the comics and novels have always been a great place to expand upon anything that exists within the live-action films.

At the start of The High Republic Adventures, Padawan Lula Talisola, one of Master Yoda’s students, and Zeen Mrala, a child from Trymant IV, who was made to live in fear of the Force and anyone who might use it, are inferred to share this same bond. Yoda’s Padawans have been sent to the Trymant system to offer their support, with the system having suffered heavily because of the aforementioned Great Disaster. Zeen, having never encountered Force users before, ends up revealing her own Force-sensitivity while attempting to fend off the Nihil with Lula. During this battle, their internal monologues and narration eventually blend into one on a single page. Despite them both being on opposite sides of the coin, with Lula fully putting her faith and trust into the Force, and Zeen with her concern and skepticism about it, it mirrors the relationship that Ben and Rey share to a large extent.

It would be an intriguing prospect to tackle such a subject in these new stories. Though one could argue dyads aren't necessarily as disliked as midi-chlorians or Snoke being revealed as a strand-cast, generally speaking, the Star Wars comic books have always been a place where the series has been able to stretch its legs with ideas that aren’t as liked, while having them fit relatively cleanly into the pre-established lore. In the meantime, we will just have to wait and see if the series follows through on this initial potential promise.
