Chapter 2

“Well, that was an interesting turn of events,” Monica commented.

She locked the door behind her and made her way down the short hallway to her room. She heads straight to her desk and turned on her fairy lamp.

“What do you make of it?” she asked.

She looked around her empty room.

“Hello? Solstice calling her guardian.”

A figure faded in next to her.

“Well, we definitely should keep an eye on this Amaya character.”

“I wonder who her solstice is?”

“A very powerful one, I would imagine…”

“Are you thinking guardian?”

“Possibly…but I’ll run it by the council, which by the way, I’m…we are late for.”

“We…? When did it become, I had to go to these meetings? And why do they always happen at midnight?”

“The fantasy world is something you created when you created me, ergo, I am you and we can’t travel through any world with just a spirit, ergo that’s why we have a solstice.”

Monica glared at her suspiciously. “Except I didn’t exactly create you, so technically I shouldn’t have to go.”

“Maybe not as Monica, but as a solstice.”

She looked away.

“Come on, you know this already…you created this world, you became a part of other’s worlds. Now, let us go before Cornelius gives us a lecture on punctuality.”

“Yeah, I know,” she said solemnly.

Natasha looked at her. “Alright, what is it?”

“Its just I thought we would be done after graduating from Fulton’s Community College. We sealed a world that was bound to destroy this world and every other world combined. That should have been the last fight, and yet here we go again. Are we ever going to be done?”

Natasha placed a hand on her shoulder. “No. They won’t stop. You have to remember that there is always going to be someone who is just as much as a creator as you are. They may not use their abilities for the right reasons which is where you come in. Being a solstice means protecting what you create.”

Monica looked at her thoughtfully but unconvinced.

“Think of it this way, do you love your family?”

“Of course.”

“Your friends? Your coworkers at Kegs?”

“Yes, I do.”

“And you would do anything if it meant protecting them from any kind of danger? Even if you did not think you would come out of it alive.”

“Yes, I would.”

“Then that’s how you have to treat the worlds you create. If you really care for the people you say you care for and if there is danger lurking about threatening those people, you must protect those worlds. Understand?”

Monica nodded. “Just as a solstice, I wouldn’t mind a little break every now and then. Be somewhat normal for once.”

“Hey, you are normal, you just don’t have a normal type of life. You still go to school, do homework, hang out with friends, work, develop crushes that turn into small fantasies, all of that is being a normal human being.”

“I suppose.”

“Don’t worry, we’ll figure this out.”

Monica looked up at her guardian, smiling a reassuring smile. She nodded and returned the smile. Then she reached into her shirt and pulled out her pen.

“I call on the power of fantasy,” she said as the top of her pen glow, “merge full spirit!”

Monica and Natasha merged to be one soul. Then Natasha took control of the pen and shouted out her familiar transformation phrase. “Eternal Earth Power!” she cried.

She let her magic surround her and transformed into her final guardian form. Her brown hair pulled back halfway and formed into a braid with blue flowers scattering around it. She wears a long sky-blue dress with a beaded belt across her waist. Sparkles flowing all the way down. Her gold tiara turns silver twisting with flowers and hearts. Her blue mask with the silver trim spread across her eyes.

“Alright, let’s go,” said Natasha.

She opened a portal and jumped through to the center of the realms. It starts out as a dark dreary place. Nothing able to be seen, only hear the footsteps sound on the cold floor. By going around the bend and walking straight towards the light she comes to the end of the corridor. Natasha pushes open the two large, detailed doors and walks into the clearing of a brightly lit room and a table in the center of it. Normally the other guardians would be sitting down waiting for her, instead, she walked in to find an old man staring hopelessly in the distance at two girls who were bickering.

“Cornelius,” she greeted him.

He looked up to see her. “Ah, Natasha, glad to see you finally decided to show up.”

“Sorry, I’m late,” she explained, “my solstice had a lead to check out in her new world. On top of giving my solstice a pep talk.”

“And was it worth checking out?” he asked curiously.

Natasha nodded. “And its something that needs to be made known among the worlds.”

“I see. Well, maybe if you can get those two to stop arguing for a second, you might actually get a warning in.”

She sighed. “What are they arguing about now?”

“Something about the politics of the fantasy world. I think I lost track after the wonderful debate of if it should be agreed to sue serious lawsuits of the real world in the fantasy world.”

“Huh…interesting, for once, unrealistic, but interesting. So, how should we break these two up?”

“We? You’re the one that’s late, you break them apart.”

She sighed. “Fine.”

She took a couple steps forward and clapped her hands together.

“Cordelia, Zaradine!”

Her voice over casted them and they immediately stopped arguing. Blinking in unison as they came into sight with Natasha.

“I believe we’re supposed to talk during a meeting, not scream at each other.”

“Oh, Natasha,” Cordelia was the first to speak. “Nice to see you actually showed up, the meeting started twenty minutes ago.”

“Yes, and I apparently missed the good parts, but at least I got here before it got ugly. What are you two fighting about?”

“Oh, you know it’s the political world,” said Zaradine, “it’s nothing we can’t handle.”

She gave a side glance over to Cordelia unconvinced. “Yeah, I don’t believe you two. Its one thing when you’re arguing over politics its another thing when you’re fighting with each other.”

They exchanged looks and then turned to Cornelius and Natasha.

“Actually,” Cordelia spoke, “there has been an unbalance in our worlds, something we can’t really identify.”

“You guys are opposite of one another,” said Cornelius, “magical politics is a bit unpredictable.”

“Yes,” Zaradine spoke this time, “but there is something in our world that is causing us to be unbalanced, which means predictable or not, something is making our worlds turn into something unpleasant. It’s becoming very unpeaceful.”

“An unbalance in the world of political views?” Natasha questioned. “Sounds a bit impossible, even if magic could operate in the real world…at least our kind of magic.”

“I never said it was magic, it’s not identified yet.”

“Can it be possible?” Cordelia wondered. “If it is not magic then what is it?”

“I don’t know,” Zaradine stressed, “all I do know is that until we figure out what it is that is destroying our worlds, we can’t do anything about it, not until we know what we are up against.”

“But Zaradine, our world is crumbling, we need to do something.”

“We all know by now that anything is possible in any of our worlds,” said Cornelius. “Perhaps you can use a spell guide, he could keep everything in check, maybe even help you research a little until you figure out this mysterious force.”

“I still think we need to protect our world first before any more damage hits.”

“The spell guide can help with that too, I know you two are not keen on magic, but maybe this time, you will be willing to let it help you.”

Cordelia listened to his offer and exchanged a look with Zaradine. She nodded and agreed. “What do we got to lose?”

Cordelia nodded. “We would be happy to accept your offer Cornelius, thank you.”

Cornelius nodded.

Zaradine sighed and turned to Natasha. “I suppose you have nothing to report…as usual.”

“Quite the contrary. As a matter of fact, I may be in need for some magical resources.”

They looked at her curiously.

“In the world of Keg’s my solstice has discovered an unknown character. She claims to be a witch of some kind. In fact, she is the last of her kind. She goes by the name, Amaya.”

“Amaya?” Zaradine wondered. “Doesn’t sound like anyone we are aware of.”

“There are a lot of unknown magics roaming around the different worlds of fantasy,” Cornelius pointed out.

“There’s something else, in Keg’s world, Amaya may know my solstice’s true identity.”

“She may know?” Cordelia questioned.

“She recited the chant but didn’t reveal her identity.”

“I see.”

“She’s asking for help to break her bloodline curse; the original caster is a floating dead spirit in a magical purple dome and is trying to destroy my solstice because her heart is pure of light.”

“So, she may know your solstice’s identity, I guess that explains the need for magical resources,” said Cornelius.

“This has me worried,” said Cordelia, “I think its best we keep an eye on her. It’s possible she could be under the suspicious link that could be terrorizing the worlds.”

They all nodded. “Agreed.”

“Until then, I’ll make sure the library stays open as long as possible,” said Cornelius.

“Isn’t that going to be a bit troublesome since the bookkeeper is a bit of a rule saver than breaker?” Natasha asked.

“Not to worry, he owes me a favor since I had to make a deal with our spirit guardian.”

Natasha nodded thoughtfully. “He’s got a point, nothing good ever comes from making deals with Soto.”

“Anything else to report?” Zaradine asked.

“Cornelius,” Cordelia spoke this time, “when we arrived, I sensed a strange ore coming from you. Its there anything wrong on your side?”

“Oh…I see, well, nothing I would consider wrong, just an old man becoming tired is all. But with all these considerations going around, it just may help me out a bit.”

“Oh?” Zaradine asked.

“There is a chance I might have found a successor.”

They looked at him surprised.

“You mean you’re retiring?” asked Cordelia.

“Not quite yet, I may be tired from becoming old, but that does not mean I have run out of inner strength, besides his training has only just began. My hope is that he will learn a thing or two with these events that are happening now. As of now it will be awhile before I consider him a guardian.”

“Cornelius…” Natasha thought and then spoke out loud, “This is the start of something sketchy, I say we stay on high alert, keep updated with our research and notify each other the second something is off in our worlds.”

They all nodded. “Agreed.”

They said their goodbyes and made their way back to their worlds. As Natasha made her way back through the portals something picked up on her senses. An intriguing yet mysterious feeling crept up her spine. She turned around to face it and saw a mysterious black figure leaning against the side of the portal.

“Can I help you?” she asked skeptically.

The shadow revealed a smile. “Don’t worry, you view me as a friend, someone that you can trust. But you need to train him first.”

“Train? Train who? Who are you?”

He let out a raspy chuckle and then disappeared. “We’ll meet in time.”

The voice echoed through the portal, making her shiver. “Alright I think I’ve had enough creepiness for one night.”

She jumped through the portal and closed it before anyone else could get through. Then she split forms with Monica and returned to her spiritual form.

“Okay,” she said, “what is going on?”

“I don’t know,” Natasha said thoughtfully and looked at her determined, “but we are going to find out.”

Monica nodded as they exchanged worried looks.
