Top 10 Things We Could/Should See in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

What will the final chapter in the Skywalker Saga bring us?

December 2019 can’t come quick enough!

Though the ninth installment of the franchise has been pushed to Christmas time of next year, filming has begun. What does that mean? The rumour mill begins to turn!

Yes, the untitled final film of the new trilogy has just began filming. Along with that, a full cast list was released and some other pieces of information have begun to leak. So with some rumours and educated guesses, what do we think will come in 2019?

1. The Title Mentioning ‘Hope’

A fitting end?

The Star Wars movies (although not chronologically) began with ‘A New Hope’. For this film to be the final movie in the Skywalker Saga, wouldn’t it be fitting for it to end on the same kind of note?

"The Last Hope," "A Dark Hope," "The Hope Strikes Back." That last one may be a joke but you see where I am coming from. Star Wars has always been one for motifs, from it’s ‘I’ve got a bad feeling about this’ recurring line to it’s constant use of crazy, over-used transitions. The final movie in the saga should be as symbolic as all of them. Hopefully JJ keeps that in mind during the production.

2. A Time Jump of Some Sort

A bit of hair growth, Boyega?

These latest Star Wars adventures have played around with something new. The jump from The Force Awakens to The Last Jedi contained zero time jumps, whereas every other film has jumped months, even years, into the next story.

With the ninth and final installment curently in production, it is interesting to note a number of things. John Boyega was seen to be growing his hair out before filming on the new Star Wars took place. Also, there is the unfortunate fact of Carrie Fisher’s death. Both of these points... well... POINT to the next film featuring a decent time chunk missing, leaving us maybe a year after we seen the final members of the The Resistance stowed away on The Millenium Falcon. We could be given a creative explanation for General Organa’s lack of presense and for Finn’s potential new look.

3. Luke Returning as a Force Ghost

But...to communicate with who?

This has been at work in the rumour mill for a while. As all fans know, Luke Skywalker died an emotional death at the end of The Last Jedi, vanishing in a Yoda-like fashion, his Jedi cloak drifting off into the sea.

If this new trilogy of films is going to follow suit by each corresponding in some way to the first Star Wars films in the 70s/80s truly, they should do a Return of the Jedi and bring the mentor of the hero back for a motivational speech in the form of a force ghost. Allow me to theorise. Chances are that the next story will feature Rey, the last Jedi standing, staying motivated in taking down Kylo Ren and The First Order. However, what if she finally has a moment where her tough exterior can’t handle it anymore and she finally realises she is no match for The First Order on her own. Then (queue cool humming noise) Luke Skywalker materialises into frame and sits down for a cuppa with young Rey. Luke is the final strand connecting the history of Star Wars together (Han and Leia only possibly returning through flashbacks), so he should be there, at the end.

4. More Backstory on Luke and Ben’s Relationship

Where did it go wrong?

There has been a rumour of there being a flashback moment featuring a shadowed couple stepping off a ship with a young boy, another man standing yards away waiting for them. Many, including this writer here, believe it to be fans getting to see the moment Ben Solo is handed over to his uncle Luke for some Jedi training. If that’s true, we could potentially get a little look into why Ben resents Luke so much.

THAT flashback moment in The Last Jedi which shown Ben and Luke’s misunderstanding that causes the former to become Kylo Ren couldn’t be the only reason for the falling out. It must run deep. So it could be interesting to see a little of where it stems from.

5. Rey Having an Apprentice

Will she pass on her (limited) knowledge?

It sounds a bit far fetched seeings as Rey had no Jedi training (I’m not backing down, Johnson) but its plausible that Daisy Ridley’s scavenger will take on someone to train in the next installment.

If there is indeed a time jump, it would cement it in seeing Rey being a mentor of sorts, showing her go full circle from hopeful nobody (like her parents, MIC DROP!!!) to being a leader in a way.

6. Finn’s Death

Is Boyega not getting to the end credits?

Finn m’boy, you’ve had a great run, but not everybody makes it to the end. For a final installment in the Star Wars Saga, someone has to bite the dust. Most people’s money will be on Kylo Ren, but let’s not make this trilogy TOO close to the original trilogy by having the villain off’d to redeem himself.

Finn has become a fairly likable character, being good in action and sincere scenes and also by delivering some of the franchise’s best comedic lines arguably. Much like what I am predicting with Rey, it would be great for the final film to come full circle with most characters. Finn has gone from scared stormtrooper on the battlefield to doing whatever is necessary to stop The First Order. For wookie’s sake, the man almost sacrificed himself to stop that door-ramming thing (I’m sorry, Google is too far away right now for answers) in The Last Jedi. I would like to see Finn be the ultimate hero of the story in biting the dust to save his new family.

7. Snoke’s Return

Does he have a much grander plan to execute?

Like a lot of things in The Last Jedi, I believe Snoke’s death was smoke and mirrors. Or maybe... SNOKE and mirrors? HAHAHAHAHA seriously I do apologise. But seriously, The Last Jedi shown Luke to project an image of himself across the galaxy, but only an image that couldn’t be touched. Snoke is supposedly all powerful, so what if he can up it to allow matter to seemingly be touched in certain ways? Like... oh I don’t know... a lightsaber?

Snoke’s death seemed too easy. I will be honest, Rian Johnson’s installment in the Star Wars Saga is not my favourite but he did deliver some shock moments. Snoke’s death surprised a lot of people in that hardly anyone expected Kylo Ren to gain full control of The First Order, but something about it was off.

My theory? He will reappear in the next film to show Kylo he needed to allow him to destroy him to fully embrace his power and lust for it. HOPEFULLY we will get some form of explanation to who he truly is as well as everyone is hoping he is the ultimate big bad to tie up the Star Wars Saga. NO GUESSES AS TO WHO THOUGH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAPLAGEUSHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

8. Poe Taking Leia’s Role as General

The trilogy is headed this way...

Sorry to touch upon the subject, but with Carrie Fisher sadly no longer appearing, it leaves a spot open for a new leader of The Resistance. Poe fits that role perfectly. The team doesn’t need a leader who will stay in one room looking at holograms all day. They need to break away from that and bring in a dynamic hero with experience in adrenaline and getting in the action, and pilot Dameron would be perfect.

I really do hope this film centres on the idea these characters ending their journey from The Force Awakens, because for Poe it ends with him taking charge. His first film appearance shown him getting in thick to fight for his belief. His second appearance shown him pushing the boundaries of a leader when he wasn’t ready. Next lets see him struggle with the burden of a leader but watch him learn bis groove in the title of General.

9. The Knights of Ren Appearing

Will they FINALLY show up properly?

These guys have been nodded to since The Force Awakens. They were reportedly to be included in The Last Jedi by either couldn’t be fitted in or wouldn’t have been given the credit they deserve. My best guess is that the next film will have The First Order at the height of their power, and Kylo’s Knights of Ren will be scowered across the galaxy. Could one of the new cast members that have been recently revealed be one of them? Could they have even maybe infiltrated The Resistance? They are desperate after all and i doubt they’d check ID if someone willingly offered themselves up.

10. Kylo Turning Good

Is young Solo finally realising the error of his ways?

This is biggie. This one separates a lot of people. Kylo spent The Force Awakens worshipping his grandfather’s ideology of the dark side, being ruthless, even murdering his own father to push himself further into darkness. In The Last Jedi he decided to wipe out everything that leads him (his helmet that resembles Vader’s, Snoke, the idea of Luke Skywalker). Then at the end of the trilogy’s second installment, did you see Kylo’s face when he went into that base on Crate? When he literally felt Rey leave him? Hux noticed it, and we definitely should have noticed it.

Ren had achieved all he ever wanted; power, his uncle gone, and freedom from a master. Yet he looks heartbroken. Could the next film have Kylo realise he has been fooling himself this whole time and all he needs really is love? Maybe the possible news of his mother’s death will push him over the edge, as he does seem to have some kind of deep connection to her.

Whatever JJ throws at us next Christmas, we are sure in for a whirlwind as the Star Wars Saga comes to a close. Star Wars Episode 9 is released in cinemas on December 20, 2019.
