Tokyo Ghoul Manga vs Anime
Why did anime fail?
Tokyo Ghoul is one of the darkest anime out there. So today we're going to talk about Tokyo Ghoul anime. All details of this anime will be covered and some facts about its popularity and dislikings as well. Tokyo Ghoul is a horror anime. It has murders, blood, dark scenes, and many more brutal things that are not suited for normal kids. Firstly Let's talk about manga and its details.
Manga & Light Novel
Tokyo Ghoul anime is mainly based on manga. Sui Ishida wrote the manga and Shueisha Corporation published this manga in Weekly Young Jump. The first chapter was released on 8th September 2011. The manga lasted long till 5th July 2018. Tokyo Ghoul has 143 chapters and 14 volumes. So every manga volume has an average of 10 chapters. Soon after the manga became popular Viz Media decided to license this manga to release it in the English language.
Let's talk about the light novel. It's a bit weird though to make a light novel out of manga. Most of the time Manga came from Light Novel to give it a better visual look. But here it's the opposite. That's why the light novel was completed in hurry and it doesn't have as many volumes as to the manga.
Anime
After the manga became popular, here comes the anime. It was first released on 4th July 2014. This anime series has a total of 4 seasons. Each season has 12 episodes. Tokyo Ghoul English dub is also available for each season. Pierrot studio produced this anime. It was directed by Shuhei Morita and written by Chuji Mikasano. Funimation and Toonami licensed this anime to release it in English dubbed language.
Tokyo Ghoul Anime Plot
Before jumping into the story let's talk about a little overview of the world where the takes place. The story takes place in an alternate reality where Ghouls lives. These ghouls look like humans but they are a little different. Ghouls can survive upon only human flesh. They secretly live among normal humans so that they won't be caught. Otherwise, authorities may chase down them and terminate them as well. These Ghouls usually are 4-7 times stronger than a normal human. They have RC cells flowing in their blood. These cells help them to solidify the blood instantly. A ghoul's skin is much more resistant than a normal human to pierce through. Every ghoul has a predatory organ "Kagune" which helps them to manifest weapons out of them to help in combats.
The story starts with Ken Kaneki, the student. He barely survived an encounter with a ghoul. Her name is Rize Kamishiro. It was revealed that he was on a date with her and she tries to eat him. After this deadly encounter, he is badly injured and his organs have been replaced with a ghoul's organs. After the organ replacement, Ken Kaneki became a half-ghoul. These half ghouls are even stronger than the pure ghouls.
Why didn't the anime stand out like the manga?
There are several reasons why the anime failed. The first season of the anime was very successful but soon after the second season came, it was ruined totally. Here are few reasons below
- Pierrot studio didn't give the anime any break and they interfere too much in the storyline. Because of this, the story was massively shrunk down after the first season.
- The studio did not follow the manga story and added many non-canon incidents in the anime that changed the story.
- The writer didn't communicate with fans that much and he also decided not to go to the production house. It created a worse scenario and the studio took over some storylines as well.
Obviously, there are many hidden story details as well. Because of this, fans started to hate this anime. Although the manga was so good. Even the studio was suggesting to read manga in order to understand the anime. It seemed clear at this point that the studio already knew about the downfall of the anime.
