This Rebel From 'Rogue One' Will Be Joining The Cast Of 'Andor' On Disney+

Makes Sense

Since we haven't yet reached the heat death of the universe, more Star Wars series are being released on Disney+ in the coming years. One of the upcoming ones is Andor, about, fittingly enough, Cassian Andor, one of the protagonists of the generally well received Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It will follow his exploits before the events of the film, showing his earlier years fighting with the Rebel Alliance against the evil Empire. It will be a prequel series to a prequel (or midquel, depending on how you want to look at), and it is set to be released in 2022 and consist of twelve episodes.

One of the good things about prequels is that you can have characters from previous films in them. This is the case with the intriguing character of Saw Gerrera, played by Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker. In Rogue One, we saw a character on his last legs, tired from all of the death and destruction that he's both seen and caused in the fight against the Empire. He (spoiler for a five-year-old movie) dies in that movie, as does, uh, everybody. So it's possible that we'll see a Saw that isn't quite so jaded. He's seen and done less, so his soul hasn't been ripped apart as much. We've seen Saw in other media before, most notably in the 2019 game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, where the player fights with Saw in his prime.

How much of a role Whitaker has in the series has yet to be seen, and it's unlikely that we'll know for sure until we actually watch it. Much like Fallen Order, he could simply be a glorified cameo, somebody that Andor meets for an episode or two and gets into some adventure or missions with, or he could be a prominent supporting character throughout the series.

Though, it's not like he's going to die at any point, right?

So far, little is known about the show, so all we have is speculation about what we are going to see. Some episodes with a younger Saw could be really interesting, and we could get a better idea about what turned him into the jaded, tired man he was in Rogue One. Maybe there will even be an episode about what turned him from an idealistic fighter who was going to save the galaxy into someone whose actions in the name of the greater good weigh heavily on him. There could even be an interesting parallel between Gerrera and Andor, as Andor looks at Saw and sees what he can become if he's not careful. It's not a stretch to think that Gerrera will be a sort of mentor for Andor as someone who has been fighting the Empire a lot longer.

Ultimately, at this time, all we have are confirmations that we'll be seeing Saw. Either way, it will be intriguing to get a closer look at this character who has been popping up in various media, but just the way he's portrayed lets us know that this is a character with a lot of history and interesting stories to tell, both good and bad.

And hey, if the reaction to everything is good enough, Forest Whitaker could wake up to a Disney executive informing him that Saw has his own show now, and filming starts in a week, so you'd better get ready. I'm calling it now: we'll be seeing a Saw Gerrera miniseries on Disney+ come 2023. With everything else that's getting its own show, I wouldn't really put it past Disney and Lucasfilm to give us that.
