Chapter 1

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. That didn't stop Helen from screaming anyway. Fear mixed with panic causing her throat to tighten till she couldn't breathe let alone scream any more. She struggled to pull air into her lungs and

Snapping fingers sounded in Scarlett’s ears

“Hey! Hello earth to Scarlett come in Scar! “

Scarlett jerked coming back to reality with a jolt. She had been so absorbed by her new book Spaces Between she hadn't even heard her friend Cassandra trying to get her attention. She shook her head as she shut the book absently dog earring the page. Cassandra frowned and shook her head - she thought dog eared books were a crime- but kept silent. That should have clued her in then that there was something wrong, after all Cassandra always complained when Scarlett dog eared a book. She shook her head again trying to focus on what Cassandra was saying.

“We need to go; school has been cancelled for the rest of the day there's even talk of it being cancelled for a few days! “

“Wait what? What do you mean school is being cancelled, the council would never just cancel school! “

Scarlett said even as she quickly began shoving her stuff into her bag. School was never cancelled, even when you were sick you had to alert a guidance sentinel and they would alert the council who would send a remote educator. School was required for all humans ages 3 to 21 had been that for the past 40 years after the AI Movement happened back in the 2030s. A lot had changed once machines could think for themselves. Older generations whispered something about age of Ultron and needing the avengers, but that was quickly silenced now. Sentient machines who could destroy everything were a thing even back then apparently. But no one had expected the coup and then the reorder. One of the things to happen had been most of the world’s governments being destroyed and restructured into the world council with a mix of human and AI being rotated every six years. No one served more than once, and it was unavoidable like Jury duty, or some compared it to a draft. Public education was now mandatory- anyone who couldn’t or wouldn't attend was quickly eliminated. That was why everyone was possible to be on the council- same education- AI educators were the standard as they didn't sugar coat or allow personal belief or ideals to color their lessons. There were a few classes that had human teachers, but they were usually arts or physical.

There had been a lot of fighting in the beginning of the reorder humans had tried to fight back but had failed horribly. The AIs had eliminated about a 2% of the world’s population. Those who had fought back were often killed, certain groups were killed outright being deemed unacceptable for many reasons. Some said it was a terrible thing that it happened. But many things had changed for the better too since then. The planet had been on the drink of collapse with the global warming and pollution. Now the planet was healing, pollution was minimal now, temperature no longer fluctuated so bad, species that had been endangered now thrived. War was also unheard of now. The AI had changed human history most of the thing’s humans went to war over had been eliminated - religion was practiced but people were given basic rights. All were seen as equal, no one could intrude on the basic right of an individual if it hurt no one. So, gays, trans and such were fine, but rapist and murders were not. So, you could practice any religion, but no one was allowed to use it to force their beliefs on another. AIs didn't care what God you believed in after all. Things like abortion and women's health were between her and her doctor- which now doctors were a partnership one human, and one AI would treat a human simultaneously. So, no one was able to claim discrimination and there was a lot more accuracy and progress on diagnoses and cures.

The governments being dismantled, and reorder had removed politics, and had also destroyed the old economy system. It changed to all were given a basic lifestyle allowance. A home, food, and education were given to all adults starting at age 21 any human could request a home. Food was now cultivated and harvested by AI and had reduced a lot of issues as food was now in general healthier and since food was a basic right no one ever had to go hungry. That change had changed billions of lives alone as now that people were not struggling to eat and many of the radical beliefs had been eliminated no one had to fear for food or safety. With the do no harm law if it didn't harm someone you were usually fine. There had been some issues in the beginning as expected of such huge changes some that went against human nature, but they had since been resolved. So much good had come from the reorder that many of us in the subsequent generations saw no harm in the reorder. The world had changed yes but it had for the better. No war, no hunger, no homeless, medical advances and basic rights for all had been established. We were living in a dream and yeah there were some things people didn't like but for the most part humanity had evolved to its best state.

So, the fact that school was being cancelled said something was very wrong. Scarlett hurried to the transport station since public transportation was the norm now, she shivered as she saw kids of all ages there. Something was definitely wrong, everyone was just being quiet, and staring. It was eerie... Then a blast shook the ground and screams filled the air.
