The Phoenix and the Dragon

A Bond

There was a phoenix burning brightly as she flew into the air. She was off in her head day dreaming. The phoenix should have been paying attention to where she was going, but she seldom did that. She thought that she was the only one that could fly as high as she, so it didn't matter to her. Since she was so deep in thought the phoenix didn't see the dragon that she was about to run into. She snapped to, but it was too late. The dragon and the phoenix collided!

Since the phoenix was in her fiery form, all of the dragon's right side was melted into her left side, rendering them both helpless. They either had to fly together or fall to their deaths. They chose wisely to fly as one.

As time went on, they soon learned to live with their predicament. Not only were they physically bonded together, but emotionally bonded as well. The phoenix got to where she could tell when the dragon was sad or anxious without the later even knowing. She wanted very much to save her from all that ailed her, even though it wasn't always possible. Likewise was it with the dragon.

Little did they know that word had spread that there were rumors of a beast with two different heads and one body lurking the earth. Many wanted to capture it. Many wanted it mounted in their great hall. Either way, this wasn't good for the companions.

One evening, a king made a decree that whoever shot the beast would live in fame, glory, and riches for the rest of their lives. Every man rose to the challenge of delivering the two, but to no avail, none succeeded.

Word spread about the decree to surrounding kingdoms. Yet, still no prize, until one day a huntsman five kingdoms north of the king came to call. He told the king that he would defeat the beast. What he failed to tell the king was that his bow and arrows were enchanted. This bow and arrows were able to shoot its target without fail, no matter how high. The king was doubtful by this point, but he told the huntsman he would allow it.

The huntman set out on his journey through fields, forest and valleys. One morning he heard laughing coming from the crevice of a mountain. The laughing was so beautiful it sounded like voices of angels. What he saw was the magnificence of the phoenix and the dragon. He quickly and quietly got his bow ready and fired his shot from the valley. Before the hunted could react, an arrow pierced the dragon's heart. She let out an awful vengeful roaring flame that reached the huntsman, killing him instantly, turning the bow and arrows to ash.

The phoenix looked down at her life long friend who was laying beside her dying, when only moments ago where laughing about the absurdness of mice. The dragon touched the wing of the phoenix's wing until her final breath. The heart of the phoenix might as well have been pierced too, because the thought of flying without her friend was just too painful to bear. She screeched so loud it killed anything that was near. The phoenix lay beside her dear friend for weeks, not wanting to leave. She knew in her heart she was gone, yet she stayed.

One night as she dreamed, the dragon visited her. She told her to fly on and burn bright and that the phoenix would always have her. When the phoenix woke up, she looked down at what remained of her friend. She lightly touched her beak to the remains then lifted her head. Gently, she tugged at the side that was attached to hers separating it forever. Gathering her strength, she flew away into the sunset, the scales of the dragon gleaming on her side.
