'The Mandalorian' Season 2 Trailer Rumored to Drop During NBA Playoffs

The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars TV series, dropped on Disney+ November 12, 2019, as one its flagship titles when the streaming service launched. It stars Pedro Pascal (whose acting credits include the Netflix original Narcos, as well as HBO’s Game of Thrones) as Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, who, along with his sidekick "The Child,” fights off other members of the Bounty Hunters' Guild, as well members of the Imperial remnant during the show's first season run of eight episodes. The show had cameo roles by such stars as Clancy Brown, Bill Burr, and even Academy Award-nominated director Werner Herzog playing the character know as "The Client." The show's main antagonist, the ruthless Moff Gideon (played by Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad fame, ended the show's first season wielding the Darksaber, a welcome nod to the animated series The Clone Wars.

15 Emmy award nominations later, season 2 of The Mandalorian is still on schedule to debut this October on Disney+. Though the exact plot of the season is still under lock and key, Giancarlo Esposito has revealed some information regarding his own character, such as his personal idea that Moff Gideon may be a Force-user. The first trailer for season 2 is rumored to release during this year's first round of the NBA playoffs, which take place August 21 and 22. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Star Wars Celebration, which would have happened days later, had to be canceled. Had it still been happening, perhaps it would have served as a continuation of Lucasfilm’s tradition of releasing trailers and news of their property during the fan event.

With old and new fans alike left with unanswered questions about the titular character, as well as his band of friends and allies who travel with him throughout the first season, a trailer may provide insight pertaining to questions fans have been asking since the last episode came out on December 27 of last year. From Moff Gideon's past and how the Darksaber came into his possession since its previous appearance in Star Wars Rebels, to the origin of The Child, a member of the same species as Jedi Masters Yoda and Yaddle (the latter having made an appearance in The Phantom Menace) who has yet to be named.

Although the timing of the NBA playoffs would serve to continue the trend of Lucasfilm to release and announce their biggest projects at the fan event, Disney may opt for a more wide release, potentially releasing the trailer online in a more controlled manner for fans to see. Regardless of Disney’s game plan to give fans their first view of the season to come, Disney has reiterated their commitment that The Mandalorian will be coming back in October uninterrupted, despite the setbacks other studios and projects have had since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Although Fan theories have emerged since the series began, such as whether The Child was a clone, fans will hopefully have some of their burning questions answered come October. It has been close to a year since Disney+ brought us the gritty spaghetti western-inspired show from a galaxy far, far away.

Although nothing is set in stone regarding season 2's trailer potentially premiering during the playoffs, an early glimpse at debatably the best Star Wars release in recent years would no doubt have fans of Star Wars, as well as basketball, at the edge of their seats. What we really need is a glimpse of the highly anticipated season to tide us all over until the season debuts later this year in October, exclusively on Disney’s streaming service.
