The Guardian

In old Norse folklore it was said that Freyja was the Goddess Of Many things. She was the Goddess of War, fertility, death and magic but above all she was the Goddess of Love and with that came the ability to look into the future. It was said that Freyja ruled over Valhalla with Odin and each of them received half of the souls that have fallen in battle.

Hildie lived in a quiet Scandinavian town, on a fairly large property. This property used to be her favorite place in her world. She played here. She connected to the energy of this place as if its trees and grass flowed through her. She had always felt this way. She loved being outside and never really minded the cold too much.

Her feelings had changed recently. She didn’t feel the magic and love for this place since her dad unexpectedly passed away alone on this property the previous May. This place no longer felt like home. After the funeral, Hildi had moved into the house on the property until she could sell it. She figured it would help her to save money.

Hildi had fallen deeply depressed in the months since her fathers passing and every day just waking up seemed to be a chore. She had become so forlorned she hadn’t slept in nights. She had made it up in her mind that she was no longer wanting to live. Her soul was tired. The thought of dying had surpassed her will to live. “Death will come for me soon be it by my own hand or of that of fate both are acceptable to me now”. Hildie said audibly to the empty house that surrounded her as she stood staring out the stark cold glass pains that lined the ceiling of the star-gazing skylight her father had created for her mother and exhaled an exasperated sigh. Suddenly appearing before her eyes was a rather large encompassing shadow. Hildie watched on in wonder as the most vibrant barn owl she had ever seen landed on the edge of the skylight. She had the most exquisite view from below the magnificent bird. The creature rotated its neck and noticed the captivated young woman and their eyes locked. Hildie gasped as she focused on the crystal blue eyes of the barn owl. It was as if the two were peering into each others souls. It was as if their souls had previously met. The energy was very familiar to her, and she breathed in deeply for what seemed like the first time in months. She allowed this new yet safe energy engulf her completely. Suddenly she experienced an over whelming urge to be outside in nature. In that moment she gave way to the nagging desire to flee and found herself barefoot in the back yard overlooking the vast property. Just then the majestic bird took brief flight before coming to a rest only a mere few meters from where Hildie stood. Silence emanated around them. The air was absent in the night, vacant from her lungs, until the owl spoke. Though it didn’t really speak it was more of a feeling but Hildie heard the words transmitted to her as clear as crystal.

“I am here, Hildie. I am Freyja, the Goddess of love, I am the Guardian.”

Hildie gasped at the realization that the owl was communicating with her and flawlessly at that. Tears flooded her eyes and her heart filled with pure raw emotion. She couldn’t even pretend that she was in control of how she felt standing there in the night sky, barefoot in the grass, in that moment. All she knew is that in her soul it felt right. It was the feeling of home. It gave her peace and she was comforted again by the same energy that held her childhood.

“Why is your head hung low little one?” Questioned the owl. “Because I fear I am unworthy of your presence and I am no longer capable of Love.” Confessed Hilde.

“Yes I have seen the future and know you believe this, and so I am here, your soul is bleak and your human body is giving up.” Freyja said. “I-I don’t understand why you would waste your time on someone such as me. At this point I am hopeless and mostly useless.”Hildie cried. “I am your Guardian little one. I am here to help you remember The Viking Goddess within you. I am here to teach you how to love yourself again. I am here to show you that you are and always have been worthy. I believe in you little bird and I intend to watch you soar.”

Hilde woke up the next morning in her bed not remembering how she got there, but having remembered all of the events from the previous night. Had I dreamt that wickedly vivid dream, Thought Hildie as she rose from her slumber. She made her way to the curvy bay window that lined the master bedroom where she flung open the shade with a seemingly new found strength and vigor. Then she saw the piercing eyes of the vibrant old barn owl she was once again basked in the pure familiar energy. It hadn’t been a dream. Hilde let a sigh of relief slip past her parted lips and allowed a smile to meet her face.

The owl spent most everyday of the months to come with Hilde teaching her and showing her how to grow. They communicated without boundaries and Hildie grew everyday learning to love herself, and then one day Freyja was gone without a trace. Hilde was very distraught and angry even she yelled at the skies “why why would you give me this friend and then pluck them from my life, the same way you took my father from me. Why why why?” she bellowed at the heavens, then as she steadied herself she calmed herself and centered as she had been taught to do. She listened and remembered the love of Freyja and all she had learned about not being codependent on anyone and how free that made her feel now in this moment. Just then it felt as if her spirit leaped from her body and soared to unimaginable heights above the clouds where she was reunited with her Guardian. She had mastered self love and she had mastered her thoughts, therefore she had mastered her life and could live out her days in happiness.
