On those winter nights when the sky was clear and the Moon was full, I'm sure I saw a face in the curtains.

It may have been the moonlight making a pattern against the roses printed on the fabric - but to me it was a face. Immobilized, haunting with a look of sorrow only those who knew real tragedy could recognize.

It was a creepy house, and no child born there had survived, even to this day.

We were a family of seven, my parents had completed their family, but my son who was born in that house didn't survive the night.

The house had been built by the Headmaster of the village school back in 1925. His daughter and Son-in-Law came to live with him in the 1950s.

The headmaster died in that house, they said he fell down the stairs one night. I'd heard some of the gossips in the village say that his Son-in-Law had pushed him down the stairs to gain the inheritance.

It may just have been malicious gossip, but my young brother could never walk down the stairs, he used to go down on his bottom, step by step, as if he was frightened of something.

My friends would always want me to go upstairs with them when they visited.

My Haunted Family Home

It is a beautiful Edwardian Style house with a dark, dark secret.

Mother had two serious nervous breakdowns in that house. She was so very ill and spent months in hospital. There was a time when I feared she would never be well again.

And then, in 2001 a crop circle appeared in the wheat growing on the Airfield at the top of the road.

Crop Circle at Chilbolton Airfield

In the bottom left-hand corner of the image is the radio telescope built in the 1960s. The two crop circles are very clear. The site in Chilbolton, close to Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, was chosen for its remote location away from major roads that may have caused interference.

The Arecibo message sent out by SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence)

The background to the original message sent from Arecibo, back in 1974: Arecibo is on the northern coast of Puerto Rico and contains a natural disc-shaped hole in the rock. Inside this bowl was constructed the world’s largest radio-telescope, with a diameter of 1000 feet.

In 1974 a number of modifications had been carried out to the transmitter, enabling it to broadcast signals at a power of up to 20 terawatts (1 terawatt = 1 trillion watts) and as an inaugural test of these improvements it was decided by SETI to transmit an encoded message to the heavens. This signal was aimed towards the globular star cluster M13, some 25,000 light years away and consisting of some 300,000 stars in the constellation of Hercules.

Construction of Chilbolton Observatory started in 1963. It was built partially on the site of RAF Chilbolton, which was decommissioned in 1946 after the end of WWII.

Several sites around the south-east of England were considered for the construction. The site at Chilbolton, on the edge of Salisbury Plain, was chosen in part because of excellent visibility of the horizon and its relative remoteness from major roads whose cars could cause interference.

Extract from a local Hampshire newspaper dated 31 August 2001

The site of the Chilbolton crop circles is the fields adjacent to the Chilbolton radio telescope located in Hampshire, United Kingdom. The 2001 Chilbolton crop circle which was reported on 21st August 2001 had two rectangular blocks at a gap of 200 meters on the same field that consisted of huge number of small pixels.

One of these two rectangular blocks represented a human face and the other one looked like the radio transmission signal that was sent out in space in 1974 by SETI or Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

While many people tried to draw lines of comparison of the face that was formed with many things, but it looked more like the much talked about “Face on Mars” which was photographed by Viking 1 on its maiden voyage to mars in 1975.

More interesting of the two was the other rectangular block which looked an almost exact replica of the Arecibo message which was transmitted by the Arecibo radio telescope in 1974.

The message was actually transmitted on November 16th, 1974, and consisted of 1679 pulses of binary code (0’s and 1’s) — which took a little under three minutes to transmit.

Decoding the Arecibo message and its response

The message comprised of many sections, with each section referring to a particular aspect of human civilization. The various sections of the message that was sent out in 1974 referred to the following:

(1) Decimal numbers, from 1 to 10

(2) Atomic numbers for major elements like Hydrogen, Oxygen, carbon, phosphorous and nitrogen

(3) Formula for bases in nucleotides of DNA and formula of sugar

(4) Double helical structure of human DNA and the number of nucleotide in DNA

(5) Depiction of a human and the height of human, which was sent as 176.4cm

(6) Population on earth

(7) The solar system, with a special highlight to the third planet

(8) The Arecibo telescope and its diameter

The decoding of the crop circle gave the following findings:

(1) Decimal numbers in the same pattern

(2) Atomic numbers had an inclusion of Silicon

(3) No change in the formulas

(4) Additional strand of DNA and the number of nucleotides in DNA was also changed

(5) The human figure was grey with the height of 100.8 cm

(6) Population figures had changed

(7) Solar system information was changed, with special highlight on third, fourth and fifth planet

(8) The diameter of the transmitter had changed

When crop circles first started appearing, it was thought that they were formed by ancient settlements, especially in this part of the world because excavations of round huts from the bronze age were found to have had foundations of flint. During dry weather, any moisture or rain, would drain through the soil and subsoil flint foundation, causing the crop to collapse forming the crop circle.

This theory was accepted for a time, and then a group of men subsequently claimed responsibility for these elaborate crop circle decorative patterns, explaining that they used scaffold boards, which on some of the designs appears feasible.

I have personally stood in a crop circle and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, the one I visited was near Silbury Hill, the largest Pre-historic Man-made mound in Europe. Probably constructed around 2400 BC.

The facility was opened in April 1967. Within several months of being commissioned the azimuth bearing of the antenna suffered a catastrophic failure. GEC were contracted to repair the bearing and devised a system to replace the failed part while leaving the 400 tonne dish ostensibly in-place.

Originally, the antenna was engaged in Ku band radio astronomy, but now operates as a S and L band radar.

The crop circle consisted of a binary message, similar to the one which was transmitted into space by the Arecibo Transmitter, back in 1974 ... but the face was ... THE FACE IN THE CURTAINS!

There have been various articles written about these crop circles: The face has been likened to 'The Face on Mars' first spotted by the Viking 1 space mission in 1976. The spacecraft returned photos of the Martian surface showing the image of a rocky face in the Cydonia region.

When I showed the image to my brother, he said "My God! IT'S THE FACE IN THE CURTAINS."

... And I thought I was the only one who saw it!

Thank you for reading to ... The End
