'The Bad Batch' Trailer Reveals A New Side To The Rancor

Cute!

Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau must have a competition going on between them to see who can create the most adorable Star Wars baby. Jon Favreau just gave us the incredibly adorable Grogu, or “Baby Yoda” if you prefer, but now Filoni has said, “Hold my beer,” to Favreau’s creation. In the new trailer for The Bad Batch, we get our first-ever look at a baby rancor.

The Bad Batch premiered last week on Disney+, and with it came many cameos, references, call-backs, and references. We were introduced to a new character named Omega, and most importantly got a promising start of the journey of Clone Force 99. Obviously, Dave Filoni has not lost any of his animation magic with his current live-action Star Wars projects. The first episode doesn’t just tell a compelling beginning to their story; it also left me wanting more. Even with the hour-long premiere, I still wanted to see more from Hunter, Wrecker, Echo, Tech, and even Crosshair. Seeing the execution of Order 66 from the clones' perspectives, the beginnings of the Empire, and how Kamino reacts to this were all interesting topics that were explored in the episode, and I look forward to seeing those continued in future episodes. Needless to say, the first episode was great, and it left me and many others craving more.

The trailer definitely shows a lot of things to look forward to in future episodes. Possibly the biggest reveal of the trailer was the rancor, which hasn’t been seen in a Star Wars show or movie in a long time. It was made famous in Return of the Jedi as Jabba’s punishment for anyone who challenged or wronged him, and it was also famously defeated by Luke when he arrived at the palace. The ones we see in the trailer are very different from the rancors we have seen in the past. These appear to be much younger and slightly more adorable. (Well, comparatively anyway.) The first one we see is much smaller and is presumably a youngling rancor. There isn’t a lot of time to fawn over its cuteness because soon after we see a much larger rancor going head-to-head against Wrecker. This rancor doesn’t appear to be fully grown either, but to see anyone go up against any rancor in brute strength is impressive. But as we learned in episode one, Wrecker does possess slightly enhanced strength. It will be interesting to see if he is able to fight a rancor with his bare fists.

The trailer also shows off a lot more to be excited about. In it, we get a look at some AT-TE’s and the Empire spreading to other planets. We also get to see our first look at Fennec Shand in the show with a fight between her and the Bad Batch presumably. I had a theory that the show would lean toward an “A-Team in space” angle, and it looks like they are leaning into it with these upcoming episodes. Toward the end of the trailer, we get to see the squad talking to a mysterious green alien, and it sounds like she is offering them a job. We even hear one of them say, “A mission’s a mission.” This may be the start of the Bad Batch doing jobs in the galaxy under the Empire’s nose. This could also mean that they may be accepting a mission they would rather avoid if they could.

The trailer succeeds in its goal of getting people hyped about future episodes. There are already a ton of theories, and, as I said, I have my own. It looks to show some promising cameos, and there is surely a lot more in store in the future installments. New episodes of The Bad Batch drop on Fridays on Disney+.
