Exciting Stuff From Celebration!

There's no sign of the Star Wars train slowing down as more and more news pours out of Celebration on the heels of the debut of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Friday. One of the newly announced shows from the Star Wars convention is an anthology series from the talented (and lately very busy) animation department at Lucasfilm. The series, dubbed Tales of the Jedi, will follow the stories of several prequel-era Jedi including Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, young Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn and his Master, Jedi Knight Dooku. The 6-part series will debut on Disney+ in Autumn of this year.

Alongside the announcement of the series, an all-too brief teaser was shown to the crowd of Star Wars fans in attendance at Celebration. There has been no shortage of these exclusive teasers at the convention, with many fans around the world hoping for online releases. Until then, here are some of the highlights from our first look at Tales of the Jedi.

The opening shot of the teaser shows a young Ahsoka, barely a toddler, confronting a huge apex predator, with massive fangs, reminiscent of a prehistoric saber-tooth cat. We've seen Jedi control creatures before, namely Ezra Bridger in Rebels, but Ahsoka taming such a massive beast at such a young age would truly be a feat to behold. Ahsoka is also seen training under her Master, Anakin Skywalker, as clone troopers in phase I armor fire stunner shots at her for her to parry with her sabers. Ahsoka's arc in this series seems to conclude with her facing a terrifying Inquisitor in the midst of a burning village. Perhaps a return to her birth place after Order 66? The character design of this new Inquisitor is somewhat reminiscent of the Sith Lord, Darth Nihilus, with his stark white skull-like mask. His appearance, combined with his movement and stance gives him a very predator-like appearance, hopefully he will shape up to be just as intimidating as his appearance.

The other arc of the first season of the show centers around Dooku and Qui-Gon (once again voiced by Liam Neeson). The two Jedi seem to be dispatched to protect a small settlement, with Dooku perhaps being too eager to resort to violence than his apprentice would like. Mace Windu also joins the fray at one point and orders Dooku to stand down. It will be great to see Windu, Dooku, and Qui-Gon all fighting side-by-side, especially as it appears that Jinn is beginning to have misgivings about his Master, with Dooku being heard in the trailer telling his Padawan that his methods are the only way to achieve victory. Given what we know about Dooku's fall to the dark side from stories like Jedi Lost and Master and Apprentice, finally seeing his conflicted character appear on-screen prior to his days as the Separatist Head of State and secret Sith Lord will be a real treat for prequel fans.

The animation style seems to be a spiritual successor to the current style used for Bad Batch and it will be interesting to see in what ways it deviates from the fan-favorite style. With the same production crew behind Clone Wars, Bad Batch, and now Tales of the Jedi, expectations are high for the newly announced series. With Kenobi airing for another 4 weeks and several other Star Wars shows announced and on their way, it is shaping up to be a legendary back half of the year for Star Wars fans.
