'Tales From The Galaxy's Edge' Will Give You An Inside Look Into The World Of Batuu

Immersion!

If there's one thing that most Star Wars fans want to do, it's actually visit the galaxy far, far away. We want to go in for a drink at the infamous Mos Eisley cantina. We want to run through the corridors of the Death Star. We want to sit in Han's seat on the Millennium Falcon. Well, thanks to the magic of Disney, and the people behind ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm's immersive entertainment studio, we will be able to. Come November 19, they will put out a new virtual reality experience called Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge. It will be an immersive VR experience for the Oculus Quest set of headsets.

The story takes place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, and is an all new adventure filled with familiar Star Wars experiences, alongside brand new material never before seen in any Star Wars media. The story takes place on the outskirts of Batuu's Black Spire Outpost, and will allow players to fulfill their childhood dreams and actually be a part of a Star Wars experience in a way that no other video game or movie ever has.

The new trailer for the experience has just dropped ahead of the November 19 release date, and it gives us a much clearer indication of what exactly everything is going to be like, without spoiling the experience entirely. It's clear from the footage that ILMxLAB didn't go halfway on this, with a highly detailed world around you that will make you feel like you're in the galaxy, living your very own space adventure. The trailer shows that we'll meet new characters, including familiar ones like R2-D2 and C-3PO, as well as an appearance by Jedi Grandmaster Yoda, thankfully voiced by Frank Oz himself. The central character, other than the player character, who the trailer didn't really reveal anything about, is the friendly bartender, who so far appears to be the character you will interact with the most. It's likely that his bar will be a sort of "home base" between missions.

However, there are a few small concerns with what has been revealed. It's shown that both the bartender and a droid dealer named Mubo will send you out on dreaded fetch quests, which is just above escort missions in terms of types of levels in video games. They often start to feel repetitive, and there aren't really any ways to make them feel fresh or new. It boils down to "get quest, find item, maybe killing a few baddies or mean animals on the way, get item, and either return, or the item is lost or stolen somehow and you need to go out and get it back." It's something that's been done in a million other video games, so to see it here is disconcerting. The trailer shows missions of you gathering fruit for the bartender or droid parts for Mubo.

Riveting. I definitely want to grind the entire story to a halt to go get fruit.

There are also worries about how well the interactive portion of the game will actually work. We've all seen, or endured, instances in VR games where you try to grab something with your controller, but it doesn't work. Your VR hand will either just go through it, or it won't close around the object, allowing you to collect it. What is in the trailer isn't actual gameplay, so we could be in for a bumpy ride until patches come out, which nobody wants in a game like this.

All of that aside, the visuals are spectacular, the story looks interesting, and it just feels like something that takes place in the Star Wars universe. You'll fight pirates, meet Yoda, get into blaster fights, and even build your own lightsaber. If done right, this could be one of the best Star Wars games of all time, and a new step forward in VR gaming.

Come November 19, we'll be able to experience it for ourselves.
