The bridge between imagination and technological advancement, where the dreamer’s vision predicts change, and foreshadows a futuristic reality. Science fiction has the ability to become “science reality”.

How did she know? This thought rolled around my mind more and more these days. How could she have known? Nobody else seemed to, but she did. She knew enough to give me the damned locket!

I do not understand how it got to this. I am alone. I knew it was going to happen eventually. I just thought it would be years from now, leaving home and going off to university with my best friends or getting a part time job and saving up to travel Australia. But no.

The reflection in the material of the dome surrounding my home showed a young female with short hair, gray eyes and a sad expression on her face. Staring at the reflection of the golden chain that held the purple heart-shaped locket, I watched as the reflection also sighed. My mind drifted back, back to a time when the cool wind caressed my skin, when the smell of fresh air was intoxicating, and the grass swayed back and forth in the breeze. Back before the Incident, as we referred to it these days. I remembered explosions, smoke, screams; most of all the screams, as our world slowly dissolved into nothing. Those long days when Lucas and I limped wearily from place to place looking for food, water, anything.

It had all ended. No one had seen it coming, well not anyone that wasn’t important and we hadn’t lived anywhere important enough for people to know, to be warned. The sun had burned everything. The people who had been left, it wasn’t pretty.

I. Unexpected Connection The night before It happened, I was at a dance club off base with my squad celebrating Danny Boy's 21st birthday in good army fashion. We'd plied him with all varieties of alcohol until he was seeing double, slurring his speech, and acting ludicrously. He approached a group of girls and began hitting upon all of them until the bartender intervened.

This is my 240th wakeup. The headache isn’t quite as bad as the last time. I still wish there were a way to cross space through a wormhole like in old cinema movies. Cryogenics have improved, but it’s still not for sissies. We are awakened every 60 days to offset the effects of atrophy.

Mara pressed herself harder into the dark shrouded corner of the room as the pounding on the heavy door intensified. The cold of the metal bar clutched tightly in her hand made her fingers ache. This had happened several times in the past two years and on each occasion the intruder had given up and left. It was not fear that made her hide in the shadows, but a wary instinct developed in the months since the world had gone to hell. Trust nothing but yourself her mother had said in the last moments they had together. Not even a thick steel security door, Mara silently mused. Her left hand fiddled with the delicate locket that hung around her neck as she stared blankly at the floor.
