Star

Penetrating stares were all she received every day. Walking down the school hall with a million eyes on her was her natural state. It wasn’t her fault. Some said that God blessed her. Blessed her with beauty, she was fit to be a model. Curves in all the right places, long legs, long shiny hair, and big eyes. It didn’t matter that her hair was black with streaks of gray and her eyes the color of midnight. Nor did it matter that she had a star in the middle of her forehead, hence the name, Star. Boys loved her, and girls hated her. Still, she was not popular. Having a bad attitude was part of the reason. The other reason was a poor family and living in the worst and roughest part of town.

It didn’t matter to Star. What did these people have to do with her? Nothing, that was the answer. Absolutely nothing. Where I come from you have to look out for number one, Star thought. With that thought Star put on a chilling smile, cold enough to stop a man’s heart. When she realized, she quickly put the smile away. A killer she was not, and never would be if she had anything to say about it.

At the moment Star was headed to the principal’s office for getting into a fight in the cafeteria. Kelly Williams, a cheerleader for their school, accidentally, so she said, spilled her lunch all over Star’s black mini skirt and white silk shirt. To make matters worse, she got the gook in Star’s suede knee-high boots. Star did not believe Kelly when she said it was an accident and told her so with a punch to the stomach. Kelly slapped Star in the face and the two got into a brisk fight. Enraged that Kelly had the nerve to put her hands on Star’s face, Star hit Kelly with a left and right hook, and the next thing Kelly knew she was coughing and sputtering on the floor with Star standing menacingly above her.

Because of the fight, Star was told to report to the principal’s office. Which she was doing, but not before she stopped by the restroom to clean herself up.

Star walked calmly to the wooden door that had ‘principal’ typed neatly across it. She turned the knob and walked in.

The office held a desk with a computer and papers scattered over it. A little woman sat behind the desk, a pair of spectacles perched delicately on her nose. She looked like a little elf with her freckles, pointy nose, and pointy ears framed by fiery red hair. Her elfin look was very much at odds with the brown pants suit she wore. “Can I help you?” she asked Star. Her voice had a high pitched nasal thing going on that reminded Star of Fran Dresher from the comedy sitcom “The Nanny.”

“Yeah, I’m here to see the principal,” Star said in the calm manner she had adopted since the fight.

“Oh sure, you can go right in. He’s been waiting for you.”

Star opened the door behind the woman’s desk that leads to the principal’s personal office.

It was rather dark in his office, with one small lamp lighting the room from a small lampstand table in the corner. The principal’s desk was a massive oak table that took up the majority of the space in the room. The rest of the space was filled with two chairs and a file cabinet where the principal kept records of every student in the school. (To be continued)

Stay tuned for the next installment of Star- a changeling story.
