Fans received many Star Wars prequel trilogy spin-offs in the early 2000s. They were of various quality. Knights of the Old Republic was a landmark in Star Wars and expanded universe quality, but most of the spin-offs focusing on the new movies disappointed. Star Wars: Republic Commando is a notable exception to the rule.

In 2005, the tactical first-person shooter received widespread praise for its gameplay, tactics and story. This game astonished critics and fans alike. Fans have only seen a few moments of Delta Squad in other media, such as novels or The Clone Wars. Aspyr Media has brought the Xbox and PC exclusive game to Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.

The Clone Wars on Geonosis begin and the game begins with the player playing the role of Delta Squad leader 38. He is an elite Clone Trooper, specially designed to tackle the most difficult missions. 38 was first deployed to the Battle of Geonosis. He commands a small team of four men, including 62 (Scorch), 39 (Fixer), 07 (Sev) and 40 (Fixer).

The Clone Wars animated series focuses on the most interesting aspects of galactic conflict, with a strong emphasis on foot soldiers. Over three campaigns and many years, Delta Squad is transformed into a veteran force. Players are taken to the Prosecutor, a derelict spaceship, and the Wookiee planet Kashyyyk. The action is fast-paced and builds tension at the right times to keep things interesting. Star Wars: Republic Commando is the only problem with the story. It takes just over eight hours to complete.

Star Wars: Republic Commando's best feature in 2005 was its tactical first-person gameplay. This is still true in 2021. The gameplay is faster than other tactical shooters such as Rainbow Six and it's not as careful. The commands can be given to the other three members of Delta Squad. Some of them are more specialized than others. This may seem like a simple approach but it works well and doesn't lack strategy or depth.

Because the three team members have the best AI of any game, this is why they are so successful. Delta Squad isn't a useless unit if they aren't given specific orders. The Clone Troopers can look after themselves without constant care. This gives the impression that the player isn't a one-man army, but a member of a squad.

Star Wars: Republic Commando excels in not allowing tactical elements to interfere with gunplay. Everything can be controlled from either the d-pad, or the A button. You can choose to order different items or locations by pressing the A button. This flexible, effective method does not compromise the gameplay.

Star Wars: Republic Commando is a port that has been enhanced, but nothing has changed. Visuals look the same as 2005. This may make it a little less appealing to some players. A minor facelift could have sufficed to satisfy most players.

There are also technical problems with the game, such as it not maintaining a steady frame rate during intense moments. Star Wars: Republic Commando cannot also reach 60 FPS. This is quite surprising considering the game was released three decades ago on a console that has not seen any major improvements in graphics or features. You will also notice that the load times are longer than expected and the loading is a little too often, which can affect the flow of the action as it moves from one scene into the next. The biggest crime is that the developers didn't take the opportunity to add coop gameplay, which fans have been requesting for years.

The Nintendo Switch version of the game also lacks the multiplayer feature from the original release. This is a shame considering the fact that the multiplayer is available on both the Xbox and PC editions. It is also playable on Xbox Series X through backward compatibility. Although Star Wars: Republic Commando's multiplayer was generally criticized as disappointing and uninteresting, it feels like players are still missing out on the entire experience.

Star Wars: Republic Commando can be played in handheld mode with no noticeable performance drop, which is the only reason why the Nintendo Switch version should be preferred. It's possible to do this, since the visuals aren't as bad on the smaller screen as they would be on a 50 inch TV. It's ideal for playing and picking up in short bursts due to its frequent checkpoints, fast-paced action, and frequent checkpoints.

Star Wars: Republic Commando is still one of the most popular Star Wars games. Those who have never played it should definitely give it a try. Although the Switch version may not offer the ultimate experience due to technical issues, it offers a solid copy of the game. Star Wars: Republic Commando's gameplay and AI have held up well over the years, even if the visuals are dated. This is the perfect Star Wars game for anyone who wants a thrilling story and a great shooter experience.
