'Star Wars' Confirms That Purge Troopers Were Clones

It Makes Sense!

Troopers, whether they be clone troopers or stormtroopers, come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. The creatives behind Star Wars projects just cannot resist reinventing the trooper with different armor and weapons. For example, Rogue One gave us the Death Troopers, which are elite troopers clad in black armor who communicate through scrambled comms. And The Rise of Skywalker gave us the Sith Troopers, who sport a nice shade of red. But beyond the films, we also have the Purge Troopers.

The Purge Troopers were first introduced in 2018 via Charles Soule's comic series Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith. Specifically, they appeared in the Burning Seas arc, which is set a year after Revenge of the Sith and serves as a dark follow-up to the Mon Cala arc of The Clone Wars.

But of course, most people who are aware of them probably know them better for their appearances in last year's hit video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. In this game, they served as formidable foes against surviving Jedi Cal Kestus. Clad in intimidating black armor, they brought out the big guns and used electric weapons in close combat. The Purge Troopers stood head and shoulders above the ordinary stormtroopers. Now, it appears that we know an in-universe reason for that.

The following passage comes straight from a new book from DK simply titled The Star Wars Book, which has contributions by Pablo Hidalgo, Dan Zehr, and Cole Horton:

"Aiding the Inquisitors are the Purge Troopers, the final batch of Kaminoan clone troopers who are clad in black armor and are specially trained to deal with lightsaber-wielding foes. While the average Imperial stormtrooper offers little help in a fight against the Jedi, the Purge Troopers are valuable assistants to the Inquisitors."

That is right. The Purge Troopers are some of the remaining clone troopers who fought in the Clone Wars. We have seen in such stories as Star Wars Rebels that the clones are generally better soldiers than the conscripts who become stormtroopers. Top that with the lingering influence of the organic chips that make these clones want to execute Order 66, and you have a reason for why the Purge Troopers seem so ruthless when they fight Cal Kestus.

We have seen what happened to some of the other clones who made it out of the Clone Wars. In Star Wars Rebels, Rex, Gregor, and Wulf were shown to be living together in retirement, before being recruited to aid what would end up being the Rebel Alliance. We also know that the Bad Batch, who had their own arc in the final season of The Clone Wars, will have their own animated series next year set during the dark times. Perhaps it may be likely for us to see the Bad Batch go up against the Purge Troopers during this time period. Throwing in the Republic Commandos in Delta Squad would be icing on the cake and make my day.

It could make for a compelling storyline, seeing these clones go up against each other and question their purpose in light of what Order 66 did to their own individual identities. The story of the clone troopers in general is very tragic, and it is nice that we are getting different layers in this cake. I do not believe that we have seen the last of the Purge Troopers in Star Wars canon. They would no doubt appear in a follow-up to Fallen Order, and I am sure that they will appear in other media as well. Their designs are just too good.
