Throughout the original trilogy, Darth Vader’s main mission had always been to take his revenge on his master, and rule the entire galaxy with his son Luke by his side. After all, it was the Sith nature to strive to overthrow the master. From the newest Darth Vader comic book series by Marvel, we learned why that changed by Return of the Jedi. We now saw the explanation behind why Vader's demeanor shifted and appeared to be more submissive to the Emperor.

In Darth Vader #12, Darth Vader searched for answers after being severely punished by his master. The dark lord arrived to the Sith world of Exegol, which was first featured in The Rise of Skywalker. Here, Vader’s previous plan for revenge and galaxy rule completely changed after he witnessed his master’s true power. Vader saw the beginning of what would be the First Order on Exegol, and he realized that it was nearly impossible to defeat the Emperor. He then had to submit his eternal loyalty to his master. This was, as we saw, a more obedient Vader in Return of the Jedi, who almost seemed afraid of the emperor. It also explained why he initially told Luke that it was too late for him to resist Palpatine, and return to the Light Side. In the end, Darth Vader’s true redemption would come after he threw the Emperor into the void of the second Death Star, and gave his life to save his son.

“But I have seen the true might and purpose of the Sith. And there is no room for another. ”

— Darth Vader

Exegol was a dark nexus filled with the power of the Dark Side of the Force, which fed Palpatine's power as he continued to pull the strings from the shadows. If Palpatine had succeeded with his plans in The Rise of Skywalker, the whole galaxy would have been enslaved to the power of the Dark Side. The immense First Order fleet hidden here would have been almost impossible to stop. If Palpatine were out of the picture, Kylo Ren could tap into the immense dark power at Exegol. If Rey had turned to the Dark Side, they could have ruled the galaxy together as Dark Lords of the Sith. If The Rise of Skywalker had gone with their first draft, Exegol would have contributed to the major character development of Rey and Kylo Ren.

In addition to fleshing out the planet Exegol, Marvel's Darth Vader comic series explored the tragic life of Darth Vader, and all the suffering he had to endure after the events of Revenge of the Sith, and the fateful duel on Mustafar. The series depicted Vader visiting the grave of his wife, the late senator Padme Amidala. The comics also show us Vader's many surgeries and all the processes that went into healing his body. It explored the many punishments that Darth Sidious handed down to Vader, as he tortured his mind and body. We got to see Vader’s inner conflicts, and the many missions he had taken in his search for his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi. We also had a glimpse at the extremely challenging and dangerous journey that Vader took in order to obtain his red lightsaber.

These new canon Darth Vader comic series gave us fans a darker view of the Star Wars galaxy. After seeing how much the Dark Lord of the Sith suffered and endured throughout his life, it made us almost feel sorry for him. Despite the dark abilities he gained, and all the evil he did for the Emperor, he lived a sad life full of pain and suffering. What will come next in the Vader comics? One can only expect new adventures, and new ways that Vader had to suffer in order to be the powerful Sith we all knew and feared.
