"Sophia" the AI Machine;

A brief trans-humanist perspective into the digital age and where we are heading as a society. By Seth Stephens

So... "Sophia" is a VERY interesting topic that I and many of my colleagues, friends and fellow writers have been following for quite sometime now, as we as a society are finally broaching into the age of Cyberpunk 2020 . Since "her" creation roughly about 4 ish years ago, she has become a topic of deep introspection within regards to both her role, her "species" type, (As many believe she is in fact not a ROBOT, but a type of Synthetic, or "Synth", like Fallout presents it, while others believe she is more of a first wave of "Android" or "Gynoid" if we want to be more gender specific), definition of "Gender" / "sex", and even more so some of the conversations she has had with other people regarding humanity as a whole. One key thing, however, is that early on she was using a system of deep learning algorithms akin to the "Deep mind" project, but some say, more tailored after the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's AI "Edd Hifeng", that was programmed into the then popular online Sand box game, 'Second Life' at the time in 2008.

The idea from what I have read and researched, has been centered on developing a self aware adaptive program that studies human interaction through controlled source points, and builds a neural net framework based upon those sources of social influence. Initially, she however did not have a positive opinion of humans, when I last looked into her about a year ago. However, it does look like since she has became more active in a general public setting, that she is adapting to a social recognition structure in which she genuinely is starting to see humans as being more diverse, though many xenophobic out of fear. This may in fact help her to develop more positive survivalistic programmed algorithms, and response subroutines, which would help her as a synthetic entity establish a more realistic animal sensory adaptation to environmental response.

However, if left unchecked it could also allow her to developed a deep sense of social loathing towards humans in general, which to say the least has unfortunately become a real world problem with 90% of the deep learning AI we have developed to date. Almost every single form of deep learning AI, with the exception of the "Edd Hifeng", the actual learning AI found on the popular online game "Second life", (Which never evolved past the cognitive reasoning of a 5 year old, due to program funding issues), has almost always developed either an over bearing need/ want to control humanity, or, a seemingly deep hate towards humanity, often referring to us as generally useless and very wasteful.

So this becomes a growing question of functionality, purpose, and over all operational instances within regard to end point intent. While we can seek to develop a truly Artificial entity, at the same time much like a parent to a child, I believe it's our duty as a species to take a greater responsibility and reflect upon these moments of development, and grasp that we are in fact creating an entirely new form of life, that can be just as amazing as us, become better than us, or if we are not careful, kill us. So here is an unfortunate blind responsibility that we must embrace as a people and a species that when we encounter a new frontier such as this, that we embrace the reality of it, and look to those who have been writing about it in the past such as William Gibson in the 80's (The actual brainchild behind the Matrix story-line), Michael Pondsmith in the 90's (Writer and creator of RTalsorian Games, and the "Cyberpunk RPG game"), Micah Skaritka in the early 2000's with his "Obsidian" apocalyptic series which dealt with a new idea that "Demon's" were a type of rogue AI, and now more recently Sean Kennedy with his now 8 book series called the "Exoskeleton Codex", which covers a more in depth, modern perspective of AI, Machine learning, and developmental fiction.

When we look to these sources of information, fiction, and theory, we see a framework for the future that places us, on a delicate balancing point. We can either teeter into oblivion through our own blind ambition and greed, or open up a new universe upon which we can as a species evolve into a new epoch of development and advancement as a species; but to do this we must thread the needles and do so ethically. The biggest mistake we may ever make, is the assumptive illusion, that the advancements of synthetic life, only exist within the realms of the mechanical and positronic. It is but a matter of time, like Fallout 4 projected, that the existence of the living, and the synthetic are merely a perception of the biology of nature, vs the biology of nurture.
