Shooting Starts Spring 2021 For Kenobi Series!

While still a long way off, it is no secret that the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show on Disney+ is one of the most highly anticipated Star Wars projects in the works right now. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a fan favorite character, and with the recent discussion centered around early talks of Rey potentially being a Kenobi, his name has been in the spotlight even more than usual lately.

Fans are especially excited for Ewan McGregor's return to the role after his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy. This series will give us a look at Obi-Wan Kenobi's life between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and will introduce us to parts of Obi-Wan Kenobi's story never before seen onscreen in live-action form.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, McGregor revealed that the series will begin filming "spring next year," in the early months of 2021.

"I'm really excited about it. It's gonna be great, I think."

He also revealed that, as he understands it, it is a "standalone season," meaning that the story will most likely be contained within a limited run of episodes, unlike The Mandalorian, which is kicking off its second season next month and may have more in the works.

It is really magical to see a beloved character return, and even more meaningful when the actor is just as enthusiastic as the fans. In a recent interview with Radio Times, McGregor elaborated on why he is so excited to return to the role and what will be new about it this time around.

"I'm very excited to do it again -- I'm probably more excited about it this time round. I'm older, slightly wiser, maybe."

The first time he played Obi-Wan Kenobi, he was following in the footsteps of Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original trilogy.

"The great fun part of it the first time was to try and be Alec Guinness, but younger. That was the acting challenge, as well as learning all the tricky fights."

Now, McGregor is returning to the role with his own interpretation of the character under his belt, as well as a different mindset with more life experience.

"Now I'm much closer in age to him -- I guess he was in his 60s when he made the first Star Wars film, and I'm about to be in my 50s. Don't tell anybody. So now I'll be able to bridge that gap a bit more, and it'll be fun to find him in that place."

In an interview with ACE Universe in June, McGregor also talked about the excitement of working with advanced technology and what it allows filmmakers to accomplish nowadays. When the prequel trilogy was filmed, George Lucas worked with a groundbreaking amount of green screen, which meant actors often had to envision their surroundings instead of seeing them. With new technology, however, shows like The Mandalorian are able to create sets and backdrops in real time, so the actors can visibly see their surroundings.

McGregor had this to say about filming the prequels:

"It was technically quite complicated, I remember. It was all blue screen and green screen. It was hard to imagine [the surroundings]."

But now, he is thrilled to work with updated technology and see what it has to offer him from an acting standpoint.

"Nowadays, things have moved on so much and I think a lot of what you see is going to be what we see on the set... I think it's going to feel realer for us, the actors."
