Rumors of Familiar 'Star Wars' Characters In The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Coming to Disney+

I Wonder Who It Will Be?

Star Wars has pretty much become a TV franchise, and one of the upcoming projects is the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The show is set to be released in 2022, so it is still a ways away. It has been described by Kathleen Kennedy as a limited series, which means that it would not have more than one season. Still, fans are excited to see Ewan McGregor return for the iconic role. For some, however, it is difficult to imagine what sort of story worthy of television could be told regarding Obi-Wan Kenobi’s exile on Tatooine, during which he is watching over young Luke Skywalker. If new rumors are anything to go by, we might have an idea, though this information should be taken with a grain of salt.

Kessel Run Transmissions are claiming that Anakin Skywalker and his Sith Lord alter ego Darth Vader will appear in the series. Furthermore, they are claiming that Commander Cody will also make an appearance. The idea is that the series would have flashbacks to the Clone Wars, with Hayden Christensen appearing as Anakin Skywalker, and in the present day events of the series, which take place eight years after Revenge of the Sith, Darth Vader’s hunt for Obi-Wan plays into the story.

If these rumors are true, then they could potentially be an interesting way of tying the Kenobi series back to Revenge of the Sith and the era in which The Clone Wars series took place. Within that animated series, we witnessed Kenobi’s bond with the clone Commander Cody, before the clones’ betrayal of the Jedi in Revenge of the Sith prompted by Order 66. Cody failed to kill Kenobi, so it could be potentially interesting seeing him grapple with his failure and hunting down Kenobi on Vader’s behalf. Unlike other clone trooper characters, the fate of Cody after the Clone Wars has not been covered. Given the relationship between him and Kenobi, there are bound to be lots of fans curious about what happened to him, and how he reacted to the Republic transitioning into the Galactic Empire.

While that could be interesting, the addition of Darth Vader himself is something that could be a questionable decision depending on how it is handled. It is clear in Star Wars Rebels that Vader is still keen on finding Kenobi. In A New Hope, it feels very much like he has not seen Kenobi since Revenge of the Sith, and that Kenobi has not been offworld since the beginning of his exile on Tatooine. These implications may not have been confirmed concretely in canon, but they are the vibe that fans have collectively accepted. If this storyline happens as described, it seems possible that there may end up being some events that challenge how the fans perceive Kenobi and Vader’s history. Given that we do not know the details for sure, we will just have to wait and see how the story of the series is executed. Hopefully, the series tells a story that is worth telling.
