Many new Lucasfilm productions are in the works right now. The COVID-19 pandemic has really put some delay in production. Although there are many shows that finally made it to the Disney+ streaming service there are still some projects that have been pushed back. In late 2020, Disney released a long list of Star Wars productions in the pipeline at their D23 conference. Among those was the interesting title of Rogue Squadron. Boy, just typing out the title gives a feeling of a cool fighter pilot combat action. Well, when is this long-anticipated production going to debut on the big screen? As of a few days ago, it looks like the film, Rogue Squadron will be released in December 2023.

Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron is Lucasfilm’s next Star Wars movie on the big screen. This is not the first time the stories of these elite pilots were explored. Their exploits were chronicled in Mike Stackpole’s X-Wing series from the Star Wars Expanded Universe (now Legends).

A GalaxyCon attendee @Jedi4Liberty tweeted about his conversation with the author. Stackpole reportedly had been in contact with Patty Jenkins when she first began production on the film:

On the other hand, Stackpole had recently come out to clarify that there may have been some misunderstanding.

"I know the tweet said that she had consulted with me. No, no, no. And, like she needs to talk to me? Holy crap. I think she knows her way around a film. Again, in things she has said about the story publicly, she has been very nice in name-checking me and referring to the books and I can't thank her enough for doing that. But, as of this point, I know only as much as you guys know and, still, will be the first guy at the theater to go see it."

Rogue Squadron was originally scheduled for December 2022. However, rumors started to circulate in November 2021 that the film would be delayed because Patty Jenkins was working on several other productions such as Wonder Woman 3 and Cleopatra. There are no release dates on either of them as of yet. Former The Hollywood Reporter editor Matthew Belloni commented on the delay of Rogue Squadron:

“That’s not unusual, of course, but it’s a laughably recurring problem at Lucasfilm under president Kathleen Kennedy, say agents: Top filmmakers are dying to make a Star Wars movie – until they sign on and experience the micromanagement and plot-point-by-committee-process.”

The planned Rogue Squadron is still in production, and details like its plot are kept under wraps. Jenkins had previously revealed that the movie will an original story with “great influence from the games and the books.”

The Rogue Squadron is the Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron founded by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. You can learn more about the adventures of this crew of elite pilots in Stackpole’s X-Wing series. Bantam Spectra’s summary of the first book in the series Rogue Squadron is as followed:

“They are sleek, swift, and deadly. They are the X-wing fighters. And as the struggle rages across the vastness of space, the fearless men and women who pilot them risk both their lives and their machines. Their mission: to defend the Rebel Alliance against a still-powerful and battle-hardened Imperial foe in a last-ditch effort to control the stars!”

Well, fans are going to have to wait for this one! From the looks of things, Patty Jenkins is a busy producer. She is trying to manage three full-screen projects at the same time. Hopefully, Rogue Squadron will make it to the big screen in December 2023. I think fans will be ready and eager for a film by then. Meanwhile, we should just sit back and enjoy all the Star Wars shows now streaming on Disney+. In addition to Star Wars stories, the Marvel franchise has some exciting productions as well. Moon Knight debuts next week on March 30, 2022. Star Wars Celebration is almost here. Rest assured, Disney is looking to exhibit a grand display of their upcoming and exciting Star Wars releases.
