And when it is said to them: Believe like the other people, they say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Beware! Surely they are fools, but they do not know. And when they meet those who believe, they say, “We are believers,” and when they go to their elders, they say, “We are with you.” We only make fun of them. Allah Almighty also makes fun of them and increases them in their rebellion and seduction. These are they who buy error for the right direction: so their trade did not profit them, nor were they guided.
Their likeness is as the likeness of a man who kindled a fire, and all things around him came to light, so that Allah took away their light and left them in darkness, who cannot see. The deaf and dumb are blind. So they do not return. Or like the rain of the sky in which there is darkness and thunder and lightning, they put their fingers in their ears for fear of death. And Allah encompasses the disbelievers. They are about to be struck by lightning. When it shines for them, they walk in it, and when it becomes dark for them, they stand up. Surely Allah has power over all things.
Tafseer:
This means that when a servant of Allah spreads the light and distinguishes the truth from falsehood, the right from wrong, the right path from error, then all the truths will be clear to those who used to see. But these hypocrites, who were blinded by selfishness, did not see anything in this light. Let no one misunderstand with the words “Allah has taken away the light of sight” that it is not their responsibility to wander in the darkness. Allah deprives the light of insight of the one who does not seek the truth himself, prefers error for himself instead of guidance, does not want to see the bright face of truth himself. When they turned away from the light of truth and wanted to wander in the darkness of falsehood, Allah gave them the power to do so.
Deaf to hear the truth, dumb to speak the truth, blind to see the truth. That is, by putting their fingers in their ears, they may for a while put themselves in the misconception that they will escape death, but in reality they cannot escape in this way, because Allah encompasses them with all His might.
Example:
The first example was of the hypocrites who were utterly deniers in their hearts and became Muslims for some purpose. And this is another example of those who were suffering from doubt and hesitation and weakness of faith. In this example, rain refers to Islam which came as a mercy for humanity. Darkness and thunder and lightning refers to the crowd of difficulties and sufferings and the fierce struggle that was taking place due to the fierce resistance of the people of Jahiliyyah against the Islamic Movement. In the last part of the parable, the condition of these hypocrites is mapped out that when things get a little easier, they get away with it, And when the clouds of trouble begin to cover the clouds, or such commands are given which strike their selfish desires and their prejudices of ignorance, they stand still.
That is to say, just as he took away the light and insight of the first type of hypocrites, so Allah could have made them blind and deaf to the truth. But it is not the rule of Allah that whoever wants to see and hear to some extent, should not let him see and hear so much. As much as they were ready to see the truth and hear the truth, so much so that Allah allowed hearing and sight to remain with them.
