Opinion: Why 'Andor' Will Be The Best 'Star Wars' Disney+ Show Of 2022

What Are Your Expectations For 'Andor'?

With so many Disney+ series on the horizon, Star Wars is about to have so much content coming out, all to various degrees of quality. From The Mandalorian, Kenobi, The Acolyte, and many others coming down the pipeline, it’s an excellent time to be a Star Wars fan and will be for the next few years. With all that being said, which one of these many Star Wars series stands out above the rest?

In this humble author's opinion, the one that seems to be shaping up to be something exceptional, the one that has the most potential and could give us a deep story, is the Andor series. This series will explore Cassian Andor before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and it has the potential to be the best of the upcoming Disney+ series in 2022.

Rogue Two

Rogue One was one of the more anticipated films when the first batch of Star Wars movies came out in 2015-2019. It showed us a Star Wars galaxy and a Galactic Civil War that was more complex than just good guy rebels vs an evil Empire. Instead, it showcased a rebellion that was divided by its own various factions and ways and methods and an Empire that was truly horrifying, willing to brutalize civilians and destroy entire cities just to get what it wanted.

Cassian Andor's character showed us a character willing to do bad things for the right reasons. To kill if need be for the greater good of the rebellion. With such a fascinating character, having a whole series dedicated to him would give us such a deep dive into the nuances of the rebellion, the fine line between insurgency and terrorism, when one stops being a good guy and becomes a villain. These fine lines and more are fascinating and not what one considers 'classic' Star Wars to be like.

Suddenly the Rebellion is Real to You

At its core, Star Wars is a very black and white story, the good guys are good, and the bad guys are bad. Sure there are areas of gray with certain characters like Boba Fett, but for the most part, we know where one stands. In Rogue One, the pureness of the rebellion is tainted, with backstabbing and inner bickering are going on. Generals are going against the chain of command for the greater good, spies everywhere. This is the thing that makes for great storytelling. Diving deep into the dirty areas of rebellion makes for a fascinating look into the psyche of being a rebel. And since Tony Gilroy is the one show running this, he will likely continue this trend.

Apart from the writing, we also see them filming this very much like a film. Using sets, locations, while the Volume is a great tool, it seems they want to go a bit more old school and treat this as a traditional filming experience. This will make it a fascinating series as well moving forward.

With such writing talent and exploring a darker era of Star Wars, Andor is in many ways an expansion of Rogue One. Rogue One is one of the more unique Star Wars films. The stars are aligning with this series so that it is lighting up to stand out among the long list of Disney+ series coming next year and beyond.

A darker look at the galaxy far, far away, but one that will prove quite interesting—quite interesting indeed.
