'New' Luke Skywalker Shows Appreciation In An Instagram Post

It Was A Dream Come True

One of the biggest reveals in The Mandalorian Season 2 finale was the reappearance of Luke Skywalker. It was a shock to everyone to see the face of a young Mark Hamill considering it has been over 40 years since Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope premiered in 1977. This was done by using a younger body double and the help of CGI. The first body double that appeared as Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian was played by Max Lloyd Jones, and the Luke Skywalker in The Book of Boba Fett was played by Scott Lang. Both were presented in the credits as “Stunt Double- Jedi.” Now the role of Luke Skywalker appears to have been officially passed on to Graham Hamilton. He recently posted an appreciation post on Instagram saying:

Co-creating #LukeSkywalker for @thebookofbobafett with master @hamillhimself was one of the most magical and fulfilling creative experiences of my life. Deep gratitude to @dave.filoni and @jonfavreau for bringing me into the family and to all the geniuses @starwars + @lucasfilms who remind us of the power of myth, and the deep responsibility of artists who bring these archetypes to life. It’s hard to express what this all meant for me, how unimaginably moving it was and still is.

Fans might recognize Hamilton from shows like Love, Death & Robots where he played the character Decker in 2019. He is also known for voicing characters in many video games ranging from main characters like Sam in Twin Mirror to additional voices in big-name games like The Last of Us Part II. The textures of Hamilton’s face were combined with Mark Hamill’s face to create the young Luke seen on screen in The Book of Boba Fett. At least, this was the technique used in The Mandalorian. It is possible that the production team has perfected the technique or tried something new considering how well Luke appeared in this series compared to the Luke in The Mandalorian.

The resurrection of a young Luke Skywalker had mostly been met with high approval but there were those that have mixed feelings towards it. One source went as far as to compare the CGI Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian to the mouth animation of South Park. Others wished that Jedi Master Plo Koon had been the one to appear at the end of The Mandalorian finale like Dave Filoni had scripted to hide the big reveal of Luke Skywalker. However, despite the mixed reactions to the first appearance of CGI Luke Skywalker, everyone seems to agree that the Luke Skywalker in The Book of Boba Fett was much better and appeared more natural.

Fans definitely are not done seeing their favorite Jedi Luke Skywalker just yet in future series similar to The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Now that Grogu has chosen to return to Din Djarin, there is no telling how much more of Luke Skywalker will be in the upcoming season 3 of The Mandalorian or if at all. It is almost certain that he will return in the Ahsoka Series even if he is only mentioned or as a brief cameo. There is so much that fans still want to know about Luke between Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Perhaps this will be revealed in a new series featuring Luke Skywalker or told through short cameos similar to the ones in The Book of Boba Fett. One thing for sure is that Star Wars fans have not seen the end of Graham Hamilton’s Luke Skywalker.
