Multiple Lightsaber Wielding Characters Confirmed In 'Kenobi' Series

Competition or Comrades for Kenobi?

Obi-Wan Kenobi is a favorite character of many Star Wars fans, due to his expert portrayals by Sir Alec Guinness originally and Ewan McGregor in the Prequel Trilogy, his status as a legacy character, and his unwavering path as a true Jedi Master. Fans have been clamoring for a movie or streaming show focusing on Master Kenobi for years and finally our calls have been answered with Obi-Wan Kenobi coming to Disney+ next year. This highly anticipated show will follow an exiled Kenobi during his days on Tatooine following Order 66, ten years after the fall of the Republic. His exact mission and the overall plot of the show are still closely guarded secrets but, little by little, rumors generated by cast and crew involved with the project have taken over the fan community. The most recent hot rumor comes to us from a member of the cast, Sung Kang, and could indicate that Kenobi might be crossing sabers with multiple foes or racing against the clock to save an imperiled Jedi.

Despite Disney's normally tight-lipped approach to rumors and leaks surrounding their streaming shows, and specifically Star Wars and Marvel content, Sung Kang has been pretty open about his involvement in Kenobi. Besides discussing the appearance of "multiple Jedi" and seeing Darth Vader on set, Kang has recently given more insight into details of his character during an interview with Screen Rant, specifically his weapon of choice. In the interview (which can be seen below) Kang talks about what Star Wars meant to him in his youth and how it is surreal to now be a part of that universe. Especially given that "(his) character has a lightsaber" which is a pretty big piece of news to so cavalierly drop in the middle of a discussion about Halloween costumes and cardboard lightsabers.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will be set a decade after the events of Revenge of the Sith, with the number of skilled saber users in the galaxy dwindling rapidly. The Jedi are now all but extinct thanks to the insidious actions of the new Sith Lord, Darth Vader. A showdown between Kenobi and Vader has already been teased by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy who called it "the rematch of the century". Given Vader's habit for deploying Imperial Inquisitors across the galaxy to aid him in hunting down and eradicating the surviving Jedi Knights it is possible that Sung Kang will be wielding a double crimson-bladed Inquisitor saber. If Kang's character is capable of tracking Kenobi to a his secluded hovel in the Jundland Wastes or even locating Luke at the Lars homestead we could be in for an epic duel between McGregor and Kang. We saw in Rebels how Kenobi reacted when a young Luke was even vaguely threatened by Maul. If an agent of the Empire were to arrive at the Lars doorstep, searching for a powerful Force-sensitive youth, Obi-Wan could be forced to cut him down.

It is also possible that Sung Kang could be carrying a saber in defense of the Force and the remnants of the Jedi Order. While too many Jedi survivors of the Clone Wars would only serve to diminish the tragedy of the events of Order 66, it has been some time since a new Jedi survivor was introduced into the cannon. We learned of a few survivors and what they did to escape the Empire with the release of Fallen Order in 2019. Could Kang follow in these Jedi footsteps? Rumor has it that Kenobi will be leaving Tatooine, setting his sacred mission to guard Luke Skywalker on the back-burner for this six episode miniseries. Few things could draw the Jedi Master away from his young ward except, perhaps, a call for aid from another Jedi survivor.
