Maul Actor Sam Witwer Hints At Cameo You "Won't Believe" In 'Book of Boba Fett'

Who Could He Be Referring To?

Warning: Spoiler Alert for The Book of Boba Fett Episode 6

Everyone has been talking about The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes A Stranger. In what many would call Chapter 16.2 of The Mandalorian, we have many more surprise appearances in addition to what some fans jokingly refer to as a “cameo” by Boba Fett. Look away now if you do not want to be spoiled (although I believe all the memes flooding the internet might have already done that for you).

As many fans waited for the clock to hit 12AM PST on February 2 so that they could catch the latest episode of The Book of Boba Fett, one person apparently was not able to join in the fun. According to his tweet on February 3, Mark Hamill himself has not seen this particular episode as of yet (which he hopefully will have rectified as soon as possible).

As hinted at by Din Djarin saying “I need to pay a visit to a little friend,” fans had already speculated that we might be visiting Grogu, currently training in the ways of the Jedi under Luke Skywalker. What follows is a quick montage of Grogu’s day, learning to control his Force abilities and trying not to get distracted at the same time.

In response to Hamill’s tweet, everyone jumped in with characters that may (or may not) have been in this particular episode, like a gonk droid, General Madine and Mon Mothma, even Elvis. One actor's tweet says it the best;

Obviously, Mark Hamill would have known that Luke Skywalker was in this particular episode, right? Someone in the production team would have contacted him about using his likeness once again, right? Ever the jokester, Hamill thanks Witwer for the spoiler alert.

While it appears that Witwer most likely is referring to Luke’s appearance in The Book of Boba Fett, we could not help but speculate whether Witwer himself could be in the season finale coming up this Wednesday February 9. Witwer is no stranger to the galaxy far, far away, he has voiced Maul in The Clone Wars, and Rebels, Starkiller in The Force Unleashed games, and Emperor Palpatine in The Force Unleashed games, Battlefront, and Jedi: Fallen Order. He has lent his voice to Book of Boba Fett earlier in Chapter 1 as the Rodian who was captured alongside Boba Fett in the Tusken Raider camp. Would it be too far-fetched that he could be portraying one of his past characters?

All of the characters Witwer played in the past are dead by the time of The Book of Boba Fett. Maul had died in a final lightsaber duel with Obi-Wan back in Rebels. Starkiller had died decades ago, even before the events of A New Hope. We can argue that Palpatine is technically alive at this time, but does Disney want to bring him back so soon before the events of the sequel trilogy?

As surprising as it may seem, Maul is probably the most likely of these characters to appear in The Book of Boba Fett. Even though he had died many years prior in the timeline, Star Wars media outlets have been hinting at the reemergence of his criminal organization, Crimson Dawn. We learned from Solo that Maul was the secret leader behind this criminal organization, maneuvering from the shadows in his mission to destroy the Sith. After the death of Dryden Vos, Qi’ra picked up the mantle of leadership. The recent canon comic book crossover event War of the Bounty Hunters, set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, depicts Crimson Dawn’s return to power in the criminal world. The current canon comic book miniseries Crimson Reign continues to chronicle the activities of Crimson Dawn and Qi’ra as they continue to destabilize the galaxy and distract the Emperor from their true mission of bringing down the Empire.

We don't know the status of Crimson Dawn and Qi’ra at this particular point in time in the galactic history. Crimson Dawn could have been wiped out in the comics. On the other hand, they could be moving to fill in the power vacuum created by both the fall of the Empire and the death of Jabba the Hutt. The Pyke syndicate has already made a move in their bid for control of Tatooine, and eventually the entire crime world. With the unclear fate of Crimson Dawn, it would not be out of the question if they were to join in the fight for Tatooine. Even though he could not appear in person, Maul could appear as a hologram recording.

I personally do not think that he will be in a flashback sequence in the next episode of The Book of Boba Fett. At this moment in time, he is still too far removed from The Mandalorian universe. However, we should not discount the possibility in the future as we continue to explore the criminal underworld in the next season of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. We already know that Emilia Clarke is ready to reprise her role as Qi’ra. If she and Crimson Dawn make a return in The Mandalorian universe, it will only be a matter of time before Maul does too.

Catch the season finale of The Book of Boba Fett on February 9, 2022.
