Liquid Rubber?

How could that be?

It may sound like a contradiction in terms but this product has revolutionised world-wide methods of construction and waterproofing.

Liquid Rubber has been in use in one form or another for 200 years, but recent scientific discoveries have enabled this product to be used in a much wider range of applications – it has even found its way into the DIY homeowner’s tool kits.

Let’s take a deeper look at this remarkable product.

WHAT IS LIQUID RUBBER?

You may not have heard of Liquid Rubber - but this marvellous product has evolved to become the catalyst that has transformed the roofing and construction industry world-wide. This tough waterproof membrane actually enabled roofs and surfaces to become truly waterproof.

On the 11 June 1496, Christopher Columbus returned from his second voyage to the “new World”, bringing back the first rubber balls from the West Indies.

The next landmark in the history of natural rubber was the Spanish discovery of the use of latex for the waterproofing of leather and fabrics in 1615.

The building industry discovered that when natural rubber was mixed with jute, straw, rag felt and other man-made materials, it provided a revolutionary waterproofing solution for roofs. The hunt then began for a solvent to enable it to be used more flexibly, for longer lasting applications.

Around 100 years ago the manufacture of liquid roof coatings became an industry, but it wasn’t until the 1960’s that acrylics, emulsions, and unsaturated polyesters were employed, leading to higher quality products with much improved reliability.

In the 1980’s Polyurethane coatings came into being, further improving the waterproofing properties and providing more reliable and flexible application methods for today’s cutting edge Liquid Rubber compounds.

WHAT CAN LIQUID RUBBER BE USED FOR?

Liquid Rubber’s flexible waterproofing property makes it almost indispensable for use as an air and water barrier to prevent corrosion and moisture damage.

No special preparation is required before application providing the surface is free from oil.

Concrete, stone, metals, bitumen, wood and plastics all provide suitable surfaces for this product.

After a layer is applied the compound cures to become a rubbery, flexible, seamless waterproof membrane. It has a highly elastomeric memory meaning it can stretch and distort but still retain its original properties.

These characteristics enable it to be applied in unorthodox situations like the underneath of bridges and stairs and to waterproof subterranean walls.

HOW LONG DOES LIQUID RUBBER LAST?

Given that every application situation is different, the rate of degradation and wear and tear will differ, but in general it is recommended that it is reapplied after ten years. Visual inspection is the key and if it seems to be degrading then it needs a fresh application.

IS LIQUID RUBBER SAFE TO USE?

• The Liquid Rubber product is quite safe to apply but care should be taken to avoid contact with the eyes.

• It is advisable that one wears old clothing or overalls and gloves as it is difficult to remove from fabrics.

• It is not injurious to your skin as it is non-toxic - should contact be unavoidable it can be easily removed with baby oil.

• Although the fumes from spraying are not poisonous, if it is being applied in an unventilated room it is recommended that a mask be worn.

APPLYING LIQUID RUBBER

• Liquid rubber can be applied in the same manner as normal paint i.e. spray gun, paint brush or roller.

• The surface area needs to be dry and clean from oil, dust and dirt so that there is close contact between the application surface and the rubber compound.

• As a general rule it will not adhere to glossy surfaces like plastic piping and silicon and is not suitable for use over varnishes and oil-based paints.

• A full coat will need about a day (24 hours) to dry thoroughly allowing for a second coat, if necessary, to be applied.

This is a great cost-effective way to put your mind at ease with the assurance that your house, structures and chattels are safely protected from the weather.
