John Boyega Would Only Return To 'Star Wars' If It Was Animated

Make This Happen!

Though the Star Wars sequel trilogy ended last year, some fans believe that we may see some of its stars return in future Star Wars projects. Daisy Ridley has not ruled out the possibility. But what about John Boyega?

John Boyega has been vocal about how he feels that some of the Star Wars characters of the sequel trilogy who were not Daisy Ridley or Adam Driver got the short end of the stick in the storytelling. Compared to those actors' characters, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Rose Tico felt sidelined as the trilogy progressed. Just think about it: Finn was marketed in the lead up to The Force Awakens as a character who seemed central to the story. People lost their minds when they saw him wielding a lightsaber. Once that lightsaber got passed down to Rey, she and Finn were no longer equals, with Rey taking on the main story while Finn took on a side plot or a subdued role in the subsequent sequels. He could have had a more important role, but the Force sensitivity that people wondered about the character was not tapped to the fullest potential.

More recently, Boyega was interviewed by Yahoo Entertainment, and talked about the missed opportunities that Colin Trevorrow would have taken Finn had he remained as the director of Episode IX. While Boyega has expressed disinterest in returning to the franchise, the interview did include a question of whether he would return if the next story to feature Finn were animated.

"Yeah. Animated would actually be dope. We could do it from home, all that kind of stuff."

If John Boyega were ever offered the role of Finn again, it would be understandable for him to turn it down, given how Finn was built up to be bigger than he actually ended up being. The fact that he seems open to do work for an animated project, however, may give people a bit more hope. Understandably, it can be demanding having to be on set and do some physical work. Comparatively, voiceover work would be a much easier process. Sure, one could probably get another actor to voice Finn, but it would just be nicer knowing that Boyega is back for the voice, similar to how Oscar Isaac voiced Poe Dameron on Star Wars Resistance.

In fact, I am of the belief that we need an animated show to really improve the sequel era. Resistance scratched the surface, sometimes focusing on stories that felt smaller than they could have been. We did not really get to see the Colossus meet up with the Resistance in the conflict against the First Order. It would be nice to have something that follows heroes like Finn and bridges the gap between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker a bit more. Or better yet, maybe something that takes place after The Rise of Skywalker. In the same way that The Clone Wars enhanced the prequel era, there is potential for a future animated series to enhance the sequel era. While 2D animation is great, for some reason, I imagine this type of story being 3D animated. Maybe I am just so used to The Clone Wars and Rebels.

Whatever style they choose, however, the story has to serve Finn very well. After all, I do not think that John Boyega would come back simply to do what an NPC in a video game could essentially do, providing a bit of information to some other main character. Finn needs to be in action, showing what a prominent role he played in the galaxy far, far away.
