Global Warming

The Earth is getting hot.

In recent years, global warming has become a bit of a problem to the world around us. With rising sea levels, ice caps melting, and to even potentially bringing back the plague! Now you may be asking yourself, what is global warming and why does it affect me? Well, here is the thing: Global warming is a gradual increase in temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. Meaning, it slowly warms up the Earth. To simplify this even further, when baking a cake or cooking dinner, you need to preheat the oven in order to get it to its desired temperature. As of right now, the Earth is still preheating and warming up.

But how does this affect me? Why should I care? Well, this would affect you because, well, where do you live? In this beautiful place called Earth that we are slowly destroying. And for the answer on why you should care, revert back to my last sentence. Although I am explaining on why you should care I never explained how it is caused. Global warming is caused by gas being released in the air, from cars to factories to almost everything. Those gases are released into the atmosphere and get stuck, the sun ends up heating up the earth, but all the UV rays get trapped because the gases are blocking the rays from leaving.

Now, what are scientists doing to help relieve the gases from earth? They are turning carbon dioxide into rocks. This helps the Earth because now there is less carbon dioxide in the air and helps get some of the heat back into space. This process takes about two years to achieve and was faster than what some scientists thought it would be. Once it is turned to stone, it is the safest place for the carbon dioxide to be. There is no way the carbon dioxide can “leak” out of the stone because, well, it is stone.

Scientists have also been fighting to disuse aerosols and refrigerants because of their linkage to the ozone layer having a hole in it. As of 2016, scientists have found the ozone layer to be healing itself. This is big news considering it was believed that there was no way it could fix itself. But the ozone layer that is healing is the one in the Antarctic. As of February 2018, all of the lower altitude ozone layers show no signs of healing.

In recent times, global warming has become a joke—a meme of sorts. No one really believes in it, they usually just blame everything on it. Oh no, it's cold in September? Global warming. It is raining in December? Global warming. The ocean is rising and killing animals in the arctics? Okay, so that one is technically global warming, but you catch my drift.

Not only is this going to affect us, but as I said in my last paragraph, global warming is also going to affect animals in a colder climate. The ice caps are melting and causing more and more animals to find a new home. Polar bear populations are decreasing, and although they are not on the endangered list yet, they are labeled as vulnerable. Emperor penguins are labeled as endangered. Narwhals are nearly extinct. There is even a song about them! And yet, we as humans that share this Earth with them have failed all these poor animals.

I know doing something to help save the environment is hard, but I also can't live without certain things that will eventually destroy the Earth. Just knowing about global warming, and its effects, can help its awareness that something is wrong.
