Gina Carano May Have Just Gotten A Free Pass Out Of 'Star Wars'

What Could Happen With Her Character?

There has been some recent controversy surrounding Gina Carano and comments she has made on her Twitter account. Twitter is always a good place to flush out people and their real beliefs, and Gina Carano is no exception.

Amidst the controversy of these tweets and other things she has said, Star Wars: The Mandalorian recently hinted in season 2's “Chapter 12: The Siege” that Gina Carano’s character, Cara Dune, may be given another opportunity to go on and do her own thing with the New Republic. This could be a potential plot device that may help her exit the show. Whether or not Star Wars: The Mandalorian is actually looking for a way to get rid of Gina Carano is another matter. But it could certainly look that way with the recent controversies. However, the show was obviously written and shot before many of the newer comments she made. Regardless, there are still some other views she holds that may be making Lucasfilm rethink having her character in Star Wars: The Mandalorian long term.

Some of the thoughts that Gina Carano has shared via Twitter have been political. In a tweet dated November 5, 2020, she talked about voter fraud in the 2020 election, tweeting about getting rid of fake votes and requiring identification at voting booths.

This is the tweet:

There was, of course, a heavy social media reaction to this, as with any controversial thing that is posted on social media. This led to some fans calling for her to be let go from Star Wars: The Mandalorian. Of course, the responses were mostly isolated to the social media networks and does not reflect the general population of Star Wars fans, but it was still something noteworthy.

Several days later, Gina Carano posted another controversial tweet. This time, it was a meme mocking people who wear face masks. Star Wars fans were, of course, livid about this and immediately took off, starting the hashtag #FireGinaCarano. This hashtag started trending.

This is the tweet:

"Democratic Government Leaders: now recommends we all wear blindfolds along with masks so we can't see what's really going on"

@colincw30 (Colin) tweeted back to her on this meme:

“Woah, Gina this is extremely irresponsible. If you are referring to the election, there is no proof of any fraud. If you at referring to mask wear, we should be doing that and if we all did it we would be able to go outside sooner.”

This is just one of the many comments she got from fans who were just shocked by her remarks.

We don’t know entirely how the rest of the season of The Mandalorian will play out or if her character will decide to leave or go. But given the recent episode, “Chapter 12: The Siege,” that could be the exit of her character for good. Especially if she or Disney/Lucasfilm want the actress to leave the show due to all this backlash that she is receiving. The comments above were from more recent controversies, but that isn’t to say that she hasn’t said things in the past. Plus, season 3 has not been filmed yet, so it would be very easy to write her character out of the show by making Cara Dune go work with the New Republic.

In the episode, New Republic officers respond to an incident. One of the officers asks Cara Dune if she would ever consider joining the New Republic given her history as a soldier and her loss on Alderaan. She tells him that she doesn’t want to join in the fight, but perhaps, later on, she might change her mind. It feels like foreshadowing for Cara Dune making some sort of move about her future. She doesn’t want to stay on Navarro forever. She stares at the New Republic medal for quite a long time, and even though it seems that she leaves it behind, there is a very strong possibility that perhaps she does not.

Again, there is no saying whether or not Gina Carano wants to leave the show due to her controversial remarks. Nor is it clear whether or not Disney/Lucasfilm may make her leave due to them. But at least with “Chapter 12: The Siege,” it does give the showrunners an out on how to write out her character in a good way if the controversy becomes too much for them to handle. In that case, the show would have to make the tough decision.
