Fans Are Obsessed With This Surprise ‘Star Wars’ Series Dropping On Disney +

The Star Wars franchise has been around for a long, long time. Since its debut with A New Hope in 1977, there has been no shortage of spin-offs and tie-ins surrounding the vast galaxy of the films. The series spawned books and comics, then came video games, and merchandise galore. This went on for quite some time until the prequel trilogy rolled around in the early 2000s. Then, things slowed down. For over a decade fans were left wanting with little to no content on the horizon. Then, Disney acquired the franchise in 2012 and the floodgates burst open once again.

Sadly, it seemed it was possible to have too much of a good thing. Riding the high of the franchise’s success, Disney oversaturated the market, and a sizable chunk of their content was met with a less than ideal reception. On the other hand, some of those properties flourished under Disney’s supervision. These well received shows were able to strike a cord with the audience. One example was The Mandalorian, which returned the series back to its roots, and drew inspiration from the westerns of old. Many Star Wars series are coming down the pipeline, following closely in its footsteps. Now it seems Disney has turned its attention to another beloved aspect of the franchise, its top-notch sound design.

Making its debut on Disney+ at the end of September, Galaxy of Sound, as the name implies, focuses on the iconic sounds the series is known for. While it would be tempting to make a series focusing on the legendary compositions of John Williams, this show opts instead to focus on another aspect of the series, the sound design.

Each episode revolves around a theme highlighted by a series of clips. For example, the episode “Connections” focuses on the physical interactions between characters and showcases all the key moments where these individuals hug, kiss, and otherwise display the bond they share. What truly makes this show shine, however, is that every episode is devoid of any sound except the sound that fits the desired theme. This includes music and even the dialogue between the actors. At the time of writing this article, the show is only seven episodes long, but a second season seems like a possibility in the future.

It is certainly a niche production, and Disney seems to agree. Marketing for Galaxy of Sound is almost nonexistent, so by all accounts it should have flown under the radar. Fans’ overwhelming response says otherwise, and the show quickly becomes a sleeper hit. With many praising its zen and downright therapeutic sound design, the project has become an instant success across the board with fans the world over eager for more. It quickly blows up all over Twitter with the #GalaxyOfSound flooding its trending list. Accounts ranging from average joes and podcasts all the way to celebrities are all coming together to show their support, and with nary a bad review in sight. It is safe to say the series has become a fan favorite.

The Star Wars franchise has never failed to inspire awe among its viewers. When it is at its best, all of the elements involved harmonize to make one of the best experiences in the industry. While many of its qualities wax and wane, Star Wars sound design is universally praised by all. Even though the series does not feature John Williams’ masterful composition, Galaxy of Sound embodies the exemplary sound design pioneered by Ben Burtt, pushing away everything else, and allowing us to revel in the wondrous sounds from the galaxy far, far away.
