The audio visual (AV) technology landscape is constantly evolving with new innovations emerging every year. As an AV consultant, it is my job to stay on top of these latest trends and solutions in order to best advise my clients. In this blog post, I will explore some of the most exciting new AV technologies from a consultant's point of view, discussing how they can benefit different organizations and projects. I will also provide some practical tips based on my experience working with these solutions.

Video Collaboration Technologies

One of the biggest growth areas in AV right now is video conferencing and collaboration technologies. The global pandemic has accelerated the adoption of remote working and virtual meetings, driving huge interest in solutions that enable effective visual communication. As a consultant, I am seeing more and more clients invest in modern video conferencing systems for boardrooms, huddle spaces and larger conference rooms.

Some of the latest and most popular video conferencing platforms include:

Zoom - This intuitive and easy to use cloud-based platform became ubiquitous during the pandemic. It offers high quality video and content sharing along with collaboration tools like whiteboarding.

Microsoft Teams - As part of the Microsoft 365 suite, Teams provides seamless integration with Office apps for shared document editing. It is well suited for larger enterprise deployments.

Cisco Webex - A powerful solution for large meeting spaces with advanced features like immersive telepresence. Webex also has great device and room management capabilities.

BlueJeans - An excellent choice for high quality, reliable video meetings with flexible subscription models. BlueJeans integrates well with room systems.

When advising clients on video conferencing options, I consider factors like meeting size, collaboration needs, budget and existing technology ecosystems. Proper equipment selection and setup are also critical for an engaging video experience. As a consultant, I work to specify the right cameras, displays, codecs and peripheral gear to maximize the benefits of these advanced communication platforms.

Digital Signage is Everywhere

Another rapidly growing AV area is digital signage. From wayfinding displays in airports and malls to corporate messaging screens, more organizations are leveraging digital content to engage audiences. As a consultant, I have seen the digital signage market explode in the last few years with an influx of new solutions.

Some top digital signage platforms today include:

Rise Vision - An all-in-one cloud-based platform for creating, managing and distributing dynamic digital signage networks from any browser. Its templates and widgets make content creation simple.

Scala - A reliable, feature-rich signage software with a large library of integrated apps and templates. Scala is well suited for enterprises with complex requirements.

Stratacache - An industry leader with a full suite of powerful digital media management, distribution and analytics tools. Stratacache offers great support for DOOH networks.

Broadsign - An excellent option for digital OOH networks, delivering real-time interactive content across screens. Broadsign prioritizes reliability and scalability.

As a consultant, when advising clients on digital signage I consider their specific messaging needs, budget, number of displays, content sources and technical capabilities. Proper player and display choices along with network design are also crucial to ensure high quality, seamless signage experiences.

Spatial Audio is a Game Changer

One particularly exciting new technology area I'm exploring is spatial audio. Enabled by object-based audio formats like Dolby Atmos and Auro-3D, spatial audio creates an immersive 3D soundscape that moves around listeners. As a consultant, I believe this innovation will transform how we experience audio visual content.

Some exciting spatial audio applications include:

Home Theater - Object-based audio takes the home theater experience to a new level with overhead and object-enabled speakers that place you inside the movie.

Concert Halls - Spatial techniques can accurately reproduce a live concert venue for listeners with binaural audio processing.

Simulation - Spatial audio is being used in flight simulators, driving sims and more for highly immersive training experiences.

Music Studios - Artists are creating spatial audio mixes that translate perfectly across any playback system.

As adoption grows, I see spatial audio becoming an essential capability for high-end theaters, experiential attractions, simulation centers and more. As a consultant, assisting clients with spatial audio design and implementation is an area of rising focus and interest. Proper speaker placement, acoustics treatment and content authoring are key to delivering true spatial experiences.

The Internet of Interactive Things

The boundaries are also dissolving between AV, IT and IoT with the rise of "interactive things" - devices, displays, systems and sensors that combine audio, video, computing and connectivity. As a consultant, I'm actively exploring ways these interactive technologies are augmenting traditional AV and creating new hybrid application spaces.

Some examples of interactive things gaining ground include:

Smart Displays - Two-way communication displays like the Microsoft Surface Hub that blend meeting room and digital signage functions.

AI Assistants - Voice assistant devices are becoming core AV system interfaces through integrations like Alexa for Business.

Wireless Presentation - Solutions such as AirMedia enable wireless screen sharing from any device on a network.

Environmental Sensors - Devices that track room conditions like the Crestron Pyng Occupancy Sensor or Lutron Window Shade Sensor.

IoT Control Systems - Platforms like Crestron Mercury that unite AV, lighting, shades and more in a single app-based interface.

As these technologies develop synergies, they could spawn entirely new AV categories around experiential retail, smart offices and assisted living. As a consultant, staying abreast of interactive innovations is critical for devising next-gen solutions.

Adapting to a Changing World

The pace of change in AV is only accelerating as new technologies emerge and converge. As a consultant, it is crucial that I continuously expand my expertise to help clients adapt, thrive and get the most value from these innovations. Some best practices I've adopted include:

Regular trainings to maintain vendor certifications and learn the latest products.

Attending industry events and expos to network, discover new solutions and absorb market trends.

Following relevant publications, analyst reports and online communities to keep my knowledge fresh.

Collaborating with technology partners to gain early access to emerging innovations through pilots and betas.

Maintaining an open test bed at my firm to try new gear, experience products first-hand and solicit client feedback.

Writing blogs, articles and creating videos to actively share my learnings with customers.

In a dynamic AV landscape, lifelong learning is crucial for consultants. By continuously evolving my own expertise, I aim to provide outstanding strategic guidance and keep delivering transformative solutions to clients in any application or industry.

Conclusion

In summary, as an AV consultant there is never a dull moment staying on top of the ever-changing world of audio visual technologies. I hope this blog post provided valuable insights into some of the most significant innovations on the horizon as well as sharing best practices for navigating this exciting yet shifting landscape. I look forward to exploring even more developing areas and technologies that will power the seamless experiences of the future. Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
